Spelling List – Third Grade
Our spelling tests are at the end of the week. In class, we will be focusing on learning the patterns, which is essential
for learning to spell words rather than simply memorizing a list.
At home, make practice fun and try the different ideas to find what helps you to master the spelling patterns.
15 Ideas for Practicing Your Spelling Words
1. Type the words on the computer 3 times in 3 different fonts.

Write the words while saying the sounds of the word out loud (Pay attention that some sounds
are made by one letter and some are made by a combination of letters).
Write words using chain spelling in either direction. You can also spell the word out loud at the
same time. You may even spell the whole word out loud each time, even when just writing the
smaller parts.

Look, Copy, Say, Cover, Write – Look at the spelling word. Copy it carefully. Spell the word out
loud (as many times as needed to remember the spelling). Cover the copied word, and write it
from memory. Check to make sure it is correct.
Write a story, poem, or song that contains all the words, or write meaningful sentences for each
word.
Create a picture using the words instead of lines. Use each word at least three times.
Practice the words using rainbow writing. (Write each word using 5 different colors. Write one
color right on top of the other to create a rainbow effect.)
Write the words three times. Write the vowels in one color and the consonants in another.
Enter the words at http://www.spellingcity.com. Then play an online game or
take an online practice test.
Practice the spelling words out-loud with a family member.
Write the words on index cards and then sort them into spelling patterns.
Create a double puzzle (word unscramble) at http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com, and
then solve the puzzle. (Parents may need to help the students create the puzzles online and
print them.)
Make the words out of play-dough or trace the words in sand.
Write your words outside with sidewalk chalk.
