UNIVERSITY / GRADUATE SPORTS PLACEMENT
From the end of August 2013 till July 2014
We are looking to appoint a full-time Graduate for a year to assist with Sport and Physical Education teaching
across the school. The successful candidate will be able to coach at least two of the following sports at a high
level - Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Netball, Tennis and Athletics. The candidate will be highly motivated and fully
prepared to undertake the demands of working in a busy and active Department.
The ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently is key to their success and a willingness to
participate fully in boarding life is essential. A positive approach to all sports, games and physical wellbeing is
expected.
Sport at the Duke of York’s
Sport is an important and vibrant part of school life and plays an integral part in the school's curriculum. The
school has a strong sporting tradition and both the Sports and Physical Education departments strive to promote
physical well-being and believe that young people should develop physical skills and achieve their highest
standard in both individual and team activities. The major sports at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School are
Rugby and Girls’ Hockey in the Autumn term, Boys’ Hockey and Netball in the Lent term and Cricket, Athletics
and Tennis in the Summer term. As well as the major sports, The Duke of York’s is very proud of the wide range
of sporting opportunities we offer our pupils, both as sports options and within the clubs structure. Swimming,
Badminton, Football, Trampolining, Horse Riding, and Rifle Shooting are just a few and with our proud and
honoured military tradition offers many outward bound and adventurous training opportunities. The various sports
are run by members of the Physical Education Department and other academic staff with the Director of Sport
having an overview of the sport and games programme significant investment has been and will continue to be
made in order to provide the best possible coaching and facilities across all sports. The current facilities includes
6 rugby pitches, 1 astro turf pitch, 4 outdoor netball courts, 4 cricket wickets and 8 nets, fitness and weights
Suite, 4 squash courts, indoor swimming pool, badminton courts, trampolines and a gymnasium all spread out
over our picturesque 150 acre site. A four court Sports Hall is due for completion in the next 18 months which will
further enhance provision.
Job Description
The University / Graduate Sports Placements will be required to coach sport at all levels from Year 7 through to
the Year 13. They will be expected to assist with the teaching of Core Physical Education and play an active role
within the administration and co-ordination of the games programme. They will be expected to be committed
member of the tutor team within a boarding House and undertake duties as required.
Main duties and responsibilities
The University / Graduate Sports Placements will be involved in coaching and teaching sport. This will include a
timetable within both the PE and Sports Departments, working closely with The Director of Sport, the Subject
Leader of Physical Education, sports coaches and PE staff across the curriculum.
Particular responsibilities include:

The primarily task of the University / Graduate Sports Placements is to maintain an active enthusiasm
for sport that will motivate and promote for skill base of the young people being taught.

Planning and coaching sports sessions throughout the year for pupils of all ages and abilities.

Consideration of the needs of individual pupils and thus ensuring that all pupils are working and
developing at their own pace, developing individual sporting skills, as well as team strategies.

Selecting and managing teams throughout the week and on a Saturdays.

Working with all the Director of Sport, the Subject Leader of PE and the Heads of individual sports to
ensure the professional development of the pupils including professional standards of punctuality,
discipline and sportsmanship.

Assisting with the smooth running of the Sports and Games department under the direction of the
Director of Sport.

Assisting with the Teaching of Core Physical Education and involvement with academic Physical
Education lessons.

Working as part of a Tutor team to assist in the smooth running of a Boarding House.

All University / Graduate Sports Placements are expected to play a full role in the life of the School,
including weekend commitments and duties.


Further Details
We are a state boarding School that caters for pupils aged 11-18 in a full boarding environment. Salary will be
dependent on the successful candidate’s qualifications and performance at interview. Plus accommodation and
board will be available for the successful applicants in return for Tutoring duties within one of the boarding
