Haw River Learning Celebration A project of the Haw River Assembly P.O. Box 187 Bynum, NC 27228 (919)542-5790 www.hawriver.org Dear Parent or Guardian: On __________________ your child will participate in an environmental education program called the Haw River Learning Celebration. Founded in 1990, this award-winning program is sponsored by the Haw River Assembly, a citizens’ group that has been working to protect the Haw River and Jordan Lake since 1982. Each year approximately 1,200 students from six different counties in the Haw River watershed visit our program sites on the banks of the river. At the Learning Celebration, students learn about the people, animals and plants living along the Haw River. They also learn how to determine water quality, play games that teach about the outdoors, sing songs, hear stories and watch a puppet show. On the day of the program, your child should come to school dressed for an active outdoor experience. “Play clothes” that can handle mud and dirt are ideal, and sturdy walking shoes or sneakers are essential. It is recommended that your child brings two pair of shoes, one that they can get wet and a dry pair they can change during lunch. Long pants are also recommended as some of our activities require sitting on the ground. Dressing in layers helps participants stay comfortable throughout the day. On a clear day, students will be in and out of open sunshine throughout the program, so sun block is encouraged. Children should be prepared with rain coats in case of light or intermittent rain. If it does rain heavily, we will hold the program at an indoor location. You may want to provide some insect repellent for your child to take along, which is a good precaution against ticks, mosquitoes, chiggers, and nosee-ums that live in the woods. Also, it is encouraged to provide a few extra snacks and a refillable water bottle for your child. Please also make sure that you advise your child’s teacher if she/he has any medical or allergy information that we should be made aware of. Safety is our number one priority. We look forward to seeing your child at the river! Sincerely, Tracy DeVoe Watershed Education Coordinator WatershedEducationCoordinator@gmail.com
