A Resolution To Be Entitled An Act For A Better Constitution
WHEREAS, strong governing documents are vital for the sustained health and well-being of
the Student Commission.
WHEREAS, the Constitution of the Student Commission of Kalamazoo College was written
in 1995, a very different time for the organization and for the College.
WHEREAS, the Constitution is poorly written and has suffered from years of neglect.
WHEREAS, the Executive Director of the American Student Government Association stated
that, “the Constitution of a student government is not a law, but a guide for that
organization.”
WHEREAS, the Constitution of the Student Commission has ceased to be a guide for the
government of the students of Kalamazoo College.
WHEREAS, attempts to alter the guidelines for amending the Student Commission
Constitution have deepened the divide between the student body and their student
government, rather than unite these entities around a positive agenda for a better Student
Commission.
WHEREAS, the Constitution of the Student Commission has failed in its duties and the
Commission must begin anew in the struggle for strong governing documents.
WHEREAS, the process of writing a new Constitution should invigorate the student body of
Kalamazoo College and the Student Commission.
RESOLVED, the Student Commission shall hold a Constitutional Convention, open to all
students, wherein a draft of a new Constitution will be presented, debated, and passed on
to the student body for ratification.
RESOLVED, the Student Commission Constitutional Convention shall tentatively take place
on Saturday April 4th, 2009 from 1pm to 4pm, location TBD.
RESOLVED, a new Constitution will supersede the current Constitution upon ratification by
the students of Kalamazoo College following the process enumerated in a new Constitution.
