Basic Information
One qualified Saint Mary’s student will be selected to participate in the Alumni Summer Fellowship Program. The student will serve
for eight weeks (June 1st – July 24th) with Bayside Community Center in San Diego, California. The student may work directly with
homeless and marginally housed individuals to help provide access to basic needs such as food, shelter, education, jobs, and health
care. The student may also work directly with staff and citizens to plan and implement campaigns to end homelessness, advocate for
access to health care, neighborhood safety, employment, and education. The students’ service will directly or indirectly empower and
benefit those who are economically disadvantaged and in need of the above items.
The fellow will live in the home of a SMC Alumni and will have his/her own bedroom. There will be a reading and writing
component to the program. A CILSA staff member coordinates and facilitates the Alumni Fellowship experience, maintaining regular
contact with the Fellows and community partners. Fellows are expected to devote 40 hours each week and are not allowed to engage
in any other employment during the fellowship period. Because the fellowship experience may impinge upon students’ ability to earn
money during the summer to pay for school expenses in the fall, each fellow will receive a $2,000 service award upon completion.

PROGRAM VALUES
1. LEADERSHIP: Leadership is the process of people coming together to benefit the common good. It is
guided by individual growth, personal commitment, collaboration, service to others, respect for all, and
civic engagement.
2. COMMUNITY: Fellows will be housed in the homes of alumni, Lasallian Christian Brothers and/or site
directors with their own bedroom and bathroom. The process of building community offers an opportunity
to share experience, faith and hope. Community requires time, effort and sacrifice, while giving back many
wonderful, unexpected gifts.
3. SOCIAL JUSTICE: The Alumni Summer Fellowship Program is committed to working for social
justice and structural change. Through service and reflection on lived experiences, Alumni Fellows will
examine the causes of oppression and look for ways to bring about justice in our world.
4. SPIRITUALITY/REFLECTION: A core component of the Alumni Summer Fellowship Program is the
opportunity for Alumni Fellows to explore and deepen their spiritual lives. Their journey is part of a lifelong process that can be simultaneously comforting and unsettling, joyous and painful. The fellows are
“contemplatives in action,” engaging in the Ignatian tradition of discernment and reflection in relation to
social justice. Catholic Social Thought and the Lasallian tradition will also be integral components during
the program. Reflection is an opportunity for the fellows to integrate the variety of experiences throughout
the program.
5. SIMPLE LIVING: The Alumni Summer Fellowship Program challenges the Alumni fellow to live a
simple and reflective lifestyle, an alternative way to living in a consumer society. The fellow is invited to
integrate his/her spirituality or faith by serving with and living among those who experience poverty and
oppression. This helps the fellow experience the lives of those with whom they interact on a daily basis and
to raise their consciousness to the human needs surrounding them.
