Minutes of Staff Council Tuesday, June 12, 2012 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Flowers Hall 230 Attendees: Lucy Benitez, Martha Bird, Ray Cordero, Dwayne Geller, Kay Hetherly, Grace Johnson, Jen LaGrange, Brad McAllister, Scott Plough, Selma Selvera, Holly Tipton, Jenny Wiley, Joyce Wilkerson. Guests: Dan Brown from University College, PACE Absentees: April Barnes, Carole Brauer-Dykema, Susan Davey, Sonya Evans, Nick LaLone, Kathy Myres, Lene Richards, Aaron Sinkar, Jackie Slaughter, Raquel Voytowich, Sharon Wilsford. Call to Order and Welcome: Joyce Wilkerson, Chair of Staff Council, welcomed everyone to the June 2012 Staff Council meeting. Approval of minutes: May minutes will be approved at the July meeting. Guest Speaker: Dr. Dann Brown, Dean University College and Director, PACE Center I. II. Introduction, handed out PACE brochure, will also follow up with an email to Special Assistant to President on his presentation. Goal of PACE a. Orientation i. 325 students for this week’s orientation ii. All students are advised in PACE b. Students are considered clients i. Families are making large investments for their child’s future ii. Make the experience personalized iii. Make the experience customized iv. Parents are loving it, they meet with the advisor too c. Programs i. Program 1, re-advised in January before problems start ii. Program 2, career advising via Career Services iii. Program 3, peer monitoring, connect with upper level students iv. Program 4, University Seminar-234 sections this Fall (US1100) d. Assessment of students going through PACE update i. Clear goals ii. 1st year completion rates iii. What is my career going to be and what will my life be like? Real world questions -career readiness inventory -write an essay on it -be aware of different careers -research on career choice -interview someone in their career choice -initiate degree plan resume (awards, scholarships, jobs) -e-Portfolio – testing it now III. IV. New UAC building and HR staffing a. Moved in June 1st b. Not finished, needs landscaping on one side due to Woods Street construction c. Already at capacity d. 2 positions open, almost filled (advising) e. 2 academic positions to fill f. Working on an interim report now g. Dedication of the building will be in early November Questions and Answers a. Other colleges that have implemented a PACE type program seem to be doing away with the programs… Mr. Brown’s response-other colleges are eliminating the Common Experience type programs due to budgeting constraints. Those programs were also addons, not centralized, like PACE is here. The ones closing are considered add-ons. b. How PACE will judge success Mr. Brown’s response was a. Achieve goals, annually assessed b. Retention data c. Graduate rate d. SARS grid-production per employee (advisors) e. Senate Bill 36, report to the Coordinating Board Committee Reports: By-Laws/UPPS – Holly Tipton Ms. Tipton reported that the committee has reviewed 40 UPPS’s to date and 14 have recently been updated on the website. Compensation – Selma Selvera Ms. Selvera reported the committee is waiting on the survey to be approved with changes. Their next topic to discuss will be bullying in the work place. Ms. Selvera attended a conference on the topic and she is looking at other schools. Elections – Ms. Wilkerson reported the results of the election were not final yet. The letters to potential new members will be sent out Monday. There were two EEO categories that did not receive any nominations – service and skilled workers. Bill Nance and JoAnn Smith may need to assign four people in these categories. Fundraising – Ray Cordero The Fundraising Committee reported $1,066 was made on the fundraiser. Scholarships/Awards – Aaron Sinkar/ Martha Bird Ms. Hetherly announced the finalist list for the award recipients. A motion was made, that passed for the four winners. (Joyce Wilkerson has the list of winners per award) Online Technology – Holly Tipton/Jen LaGrange Ms. Tipton reported that the website was updated with the Quick Tips link. Within that link is the waived parking permit for disabled veterans. Orientation – Susan Davey Ms. LaGrange reported that she is talking to a friend of hers that might be able to cater the orientation. She was also interested in the new rules from Risk Management about serving food on campus. Perks – Aaron Sinkar No report. Public Relations – Dwayne Geller/Lucy Benitez Mr. Geller asked that the vendor for the plaques on the 3rd floor be firmed up. Mr. Geller also motioned to purchase a display case if Staff Council receives additional funding from an outside source, motion passed. To see an example, please visit the 9th floor of JCK. Staff Council will sell the old display case. Transportation and Parking – Jenny Wiley/ Carole Brauer-Dykema Ms. Wiley reported that the next phase of detours due to construction will be taking place concerning University Drive. The next phase includes installing a new traffic signal at University and Edward Gary. The River House on CM Allen Parkway is getting a new parking lot. Completion projected by August 15th. Moore Street will be closed at the bottom of the hill where it meets Ranch Road 12 up to the parking lot for Bexar Hall. Moore Street will be closed until August 2014. Detour via Lindsey or Ranch Road 12 to Holland Street. Moon Street to Wood Street will change again in mid August and will flow through a portion of the JCK parking lot. External Committees Reports: Facilities Committee-Ms. Wilkerson reported the beginning of construction on Hopkins and Thorpe Lane widening and realignment to begin in November. Safety Committee-Ms. Wilkerson reported they discussed inappropriate disposal of cigarettes, lack of enforcement on the smoking ban and the trash cans have been taken up that used to be for cigarettes. The committee is taking the complaint to the President’s Cabinet. Old Business No report.
