(Part II Essay Portion begins on the next page.) 11-2013 Indiana University East APPLICATION FOR STUDENT TEACHING School of Education Part II Essay Portion Everything in RED must be deleted from your final copy of this student teaching application prior to submission to the Director of Field Experiences. Before beginning Part II be sure Part I is adjusted to remain on one page with Part II beginning immediately after the page break. Essay Directions: Type/word-process your responses (in short essay form) to the questions below. Remember, professional educators will be reading this document to learn more about your potential as a student teacher. Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, word usage, etc. are absolutely necessary. You may take a draft of your document to the IUE Writing Lab for assistance in preparing your final copy. Proofread your completed work carefully! A poorly written document could delay your student teaching placement process. Type (or use as is) the question in bold print before each response typed in unbolded print. Double space or use 1.5 spacing in essay responses. There is no required length for your essay responses. However, less than 3 sentences would be inadequate and more than one page (1.5 or double spaced) would be excessive. Be attentive to the paging of your completed document. If you have only a few sentences going onto a final page, make some formatting adjustments to include those last few sentences on the previous page. School superintendents, administrative secretaries, principals and/or cooperating teachers who may be printing out copies of your electronic application do not need to be using an additional sheet of paper that your careful formatting could have eliminated. If a page ends with the bolded question at the bottom and the response is on the next page, move the question to the top of the next page. When Part II is complete, the first thing in this section at the top of the page will be question number 1. Remember to remove everything in red type. 1. What factors influenced your decision to pursue a teaching career? These can be personal, professional or both. Name the factors and support them with evidence or a rationale. 2. What are the three most important attributes of an effective teacher? These can come from your experiences as a K-12 student or from things you’ve learned in your coursework here at IUE. “Effective” is a key word in this question. 3. What special skills, interests, or experiences (i.e., sports, drama, music, travel, volunteer work, coaching, work experience, computer skills, etc.) can you bring into the classroom or school? Share what you can contribute to the enhancement of any school environment. This is about how a school will benefit from your contributions and presence. It’s not about what the school will do for you. 4. List the specific areas for which you would appreciate special assistance (i.e., planning, organizing, classroom management, questioning techniques, etc.) during student teaching? Review the INTASC principles and Division themes before answering this question. Since you will have to prove your implementation of INTASC and themes during student teaching, it would be helpful to focus on these standards now as you respond to this question. 5. Give a description of how you see yourself as a teacher. As you move through the teacher education program you will document your answers to the question “Who am I as a teacher?” This essay question requires you to begin thinking about and envisioning yourself as a teacher in the future and documents your answer to “Who am I as a teacher?” at this early point in the teacher education program. 11-2013
