Roll of Honour 1914-1918
As part of the Village’s marking of the Great War and in honour of their
memory we record the names of those who are commemorated on the West
Meon War Memorial from that war, and who fell in the current month.
1st October 1917 Fred Arthur FORD
Sergeant 32163, 248th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, age 26
Killed in action close to the Menin Road, when his battery was struck by
German shellfire. Buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres,
Belgium. Fred was born in Warnford, Hampshire, the elder son of Tom and
Julia Ford. Fred, and his brother Albert joined the army as regular soldiers
before WW1, both serving with the RGA.
14th October1916 John William TRIGGS
Lance Corporal 29544, 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment, age 33
Killed Near Delville Wood, during the 1st Battle of the Somme.
He has no known grave – commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme,
France. John William Triggs was born in West Meon and was the only son of
John and Elizabeth Triggs.
22nd October 1918 Wilfred Bricknall GREGORY
Private355035, 1st/9th Bn. Hampshire Regiment, age 24
Died of Influenza, in India. His original place of burial is no longer identifiable
and he is commemorated on Kirkee 1914-1918 War Memorial, Poona,
Bombay, India. Wilfred was born in West Meon, the eldest son of Walter and
Ellen Gregory, and cousin of Fred Gregory, who also died from influenza whilst
on service in India, on 2 November 1918.
23rd October 1916 William Charles KELLY
Private 14547, 1st Bn. Hampshire Regiment, age 25
Killed in action during the 1st Battle of the Somme. Has no known grave, and is
commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. William was born
in Armsworth, near Alresford, Hampshire, the son of Harry and Ellen Kelly. His
younger brother, Albert was killed in action in Belgium on 1st August 1917.
29th October 1914 The Hon. Charles DOUGLAS-PENNANT
Lieutenant, 1st Bn. Coldstream Guards, age 37. Killed in action near Ghelvelt
Belgium. Buried in Perth (China Wall), Belgium. Born at Wicken Park,
Northamptonshire, he was the second son of George Sholto Gordon 2nd Baron
Penryn, and Gertrude Lady Penrhyn, who were staying at Hall Place West
Meon at the time of his death.
31st October 1914 Reginald Bracebridge HADLEY
Lieutenant, 1st Bn. South Wales Borderers, Machine Gun Company, age 23.
Killed in action near Ypres, Belgium. He has no known Grave-commemorated
on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Born in Bromsgrove, Warwickshire,
he was the son of William and Elizabeth Hadley of 28 Burghley Road,
Wimbledon, London. Unfortunately it has not been possible to trace Reginald’s
connection with West Meon.
1st November 1918 George GRANT
Private 44411, 1st/4th Bn. Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of
Wale’s), age 19
Formerly Private 45958, Hampshire Regiment
Killed in action, during the Battle of Vittorio Veneto.
Buried in Granezza British Cemetery, near Asagio, Lusiana Italy.
Born in West Meon
7th November 1914 William GRANT
Private 6984, 1st Bn. Hampshire Regiment, age 27
Killed in action during a German attack on the southern edge of Ypres salient.
He has no known grave – Commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainault,
Belgium.
William was born in Chitterne, Wiltshire.
George and William were brothers, two of seven sons of Frederick and Louisa
Grant.
2nd November 1918 Fred GREGORY
Private 355911, C Company, 1st/9th Bn. Hampshire Regiment, age 30
Died of Influenza in India.
He is buried in Delhi War Cemetery, India
Fred was born in West Meon, the son of the late James and Elizabeth Gregory.
His cousin, Wilfred Gregory, also died of Influenza on 22nd October 1918
None of those whose names are recorded on the West Meon War Memorial
died in the month of December. This therefore concludes the Roll of Honour.
Their sacrifice, with those who died in the 1939-45 war, and in other conflicts
around the world, will be marked at the Remembrance Day service at West
~Meon on Sunday 9th November at 10.50am.
