Topic A: State sponsored terrorism Delegate: Isabela Fernandez Country: United States Terrorism always leads to monumental disasters. It has been present for many years. Countries support terrorism. State sponsored terrorism has been growing throughout the years. One of many terrorist’s goal is to harm civilians to concern the government also because of religious concerns and to prove a point. Combating state sponsored terrorism is harder now with all the power it has because of all the countries supporting it. State sponsored terrorism is a very severe problem now a days, because apart of killing many people, countries are providing food, medical resources, water and refugee to many wanted terrorists by the US. Therefore, there have been many actions done by the UN based on state sponsored terrorism. After the September 9, 2001 tragedy a Counter-Terrorism Committee was created through the UN. A list was created by the United States, which mentions which countries are involved with state sponsored terrorism and the ones not mention are not certainly involved. My delegation would like to assure the fellow delegations to understand the importance of state sponsored terrorism and how severe is the problem. The United States of America has had many attacks in the country based on state sponsored terrorism but has never committed sponsored attacks. My delegation is truly against it or any type of terrorism. Various countries are part of the US State Sponsored terrorism list, which are Iran, Syria, Cuba and Sudan. Yet they’re are countries like Russia, Pakistan and Afghanistan that are suspected of implementing state sponsored terrorism but are not in the list. There have been many events concerning state sponsored terrorism. On 1979 United States accused Syria on participating on sponsored attacks that led Syria the first nation on the US sponsored terrorism list. Sudan is also offering refugee to suspects of assassination. The Hezbollah group in Lebanon had bombed the US Beirut Embassy in 1983 as a goal to terrorize Israel, but now the US lends up to 100 million dollars to enforce UN task forces in Lebanon to stop terrorism. Iran has been one of the most active countries in state sponsored terrorism; it was also part of the US Beirut Embassy bombing and the 1985 plane hijacking. Not to mention the assassination of the Secretary General. Furthermore, on September 9, 2001 the Al Qaeda group led by Osama Bin Laden crashed into the Twin Towers in New York, which caused immense disaster and thousands of killings. After the 9/11, the US targeted Afghanistan, which led to war. Now a day, Cuba is hiding wanted terrorists by the US and is providing housing; food, education and medical care for them. Also, Iran led the 2006 Second Gulf War. All these events have led countries to the US state sponsored terrorism list. Adding on, the US has many alliances in its position such as England, Spain, Jordan, China and Lebanon the countries who are known to be against state sponsored terrorism. The US has involvement with the UN in the past when the Counter- Terrorism Committee was created after 9/11 tragedy. In conclusion, The US is completely against state sponsored terrorism and is predisposed to do anything to retain it. The United States of America proposes that the countries that are members of the UN and are in favor of state sponsored terrorism should not under any circumstance allow state sponsored terrorism in their countries. Some solutions my delegation has already implemented are that after the 9/11, through the UN, the Counter Terrorism Committee was created to prevent a tremendous conflicts like the one experienced. To end with state sponsored terrorism it takes time and dedication. The US states that state sponsored terrorism should not be ignored and it must me identified and stopped before any conflict ascends. To all delegations against state sponsored terrorism my country proposes there should be secret agents sent by the UN to do private checkups if the country is still sponsoring terrorism. If check ups result, as the country still sponsoring terrorism there would be severe economic sanctions and international sanctions. My country is also willing to reduce trade to assure it’s safe and ban exports of weapons in the United States. Lastly, my delegation would boycott the countries implementing state sponsored terrorism to siege the country. My delegation would completely agree to any solution to stop state sponsored terrorism and is willing to hear out other solutions that can be implemented as well. To conclude, the countries that are in favor of state sponsored terrorism should keep in mind the monumental disasters led to it Sources: 1. Background Paper State Sponsored Terrorism IMMUNS 1 2.
