Deerfield Farmers Market Poster Contest Criteria Page -2- Additional Criteria 1. The Product: Any fruit or vegetable used in an image should be an item that is grown by Midwest farmers and found at a Midwest farmers market (i.e., no bananas, citrus, avocados, artichokes, pineapples, etc.) 2. Seasonality: Locally grown fruit and vegetables are seasonal. For example, strawberries, peas and asparagus are harvested in the spring; corn, peaches and tomatoes in the summer; squash, gourds and pumpkins in the fall. Students’ understanding of this may be helpful when deciding how to create their poster. 3. Consumer/Viewer: Students should consider who will be viewing their poster. Posters are displayed in storefront windows in downtown Deerfield. Therefore, print, photos and/or images, and color contrast should be visible from the sidewalk and street to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. 4. Students should also keep in mind that their posters will be on display for the community to enjoy in Village Hall, on the Village website, cable channel and local publications. 5. Representation of the market: We encourage students to visit the farmers market or even a local farm (Didier Farm is located at 16678 Aptakisic Road, Prairie View, just west of Lincolnshire) to get a sense of what the market is all about. The use of students’ original artwork and photographs is also encouraged and even preferred over iStock photos. The Deerfield Farmers Market also has an archive of photos which can be made available to students if they are interested.
