Unit 1 Fiction and Nonfiction
About the Unit: Unit 1 focuses on the structure of fiction and nonfiction.
How do we decide what is true?
Essential Learnings:
 Students will be able to use a variety of strategies (e.g. context clues, word parts, etc.) to determine the meaning of unknown words
 Students will be able to read a text and analyze its features and organizational structure
 Students will be able to apply conventions of grammar (e.g. pronouns, capitalization, and spelling) in writing
 Students will be able to draft and revise a descriptive expository essay with precise language and consistency between paragraphs

About the Unit: Unit 2 focuses on reading and analyzing short stories.
Is conflict always bad?

 Students will be able to compare and contrast the shades of meaning of similar words within a text.
 Students will be able to analyze how elements of fiction impact the plot and development of themes.
 Students will be able to use perfect verb tenses, colons, semi-colons, and commas in writing.
