RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CORE CHANGES WITH CCRC AND CCST RECOMMENDATIONS TO VP COUNCIL The Office of Curriculum Management has received these recommendations for consideration as a part of the DCCCD Core Curriculum. Recommendations include additions to and/or deletions from the core. ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE Communications OVERVIEW of RECOMMENDATION and RATIONALE CORE CURRICULUM REVIEW COMMITTEE The Office of Educational Affairs is recommending a change to include the addition of COMM 2366 in Tier 2 - Core Domain under Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience category. This recommendation is based on the cross-listing of this course with DRAM 2366 in the ACGM. The inclusion of this course will allow students an option to select either of the two courses and flexibility with their course offerings. RESPONSE: Add COMM 2366 to the DCCCD Core in Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience Learning Category, section CB050 COMMENTS: The DCCCD Catalog notes that COMM 2366 and DRAM 2366 are cross-listed, as determined by the ACGM, and “The student may register for either DRAM 2366 or COMM 2366...” Due to this statement, it is illogical to include one of these courses for core credit and not the other. The DCCCD courses have identical course descriptions and match the course description in the ACGM, but differ in titles, content, and purpose. In addition, COMM 2366 has no reading pre-requisite and DRAM 2366 does. The CCRC recommends that both discipline committees meet to discuss the differences in the courses and determine if there is a need for both course offerings. (The Office of Educational Affairs prefers that course titles match those listed in the ACGM). See Appendix A for documentation. (RESPONSE/COMMENTS/DOCUMENTATION, ETC.) CORE CURRICULUM STEERING TEAM (RESPONSE/ RECOMMENDATION) RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: Add COMM 2366 to the DCCCD Core in Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience Learning Category, section CB050, starting in Fall 2013, provided that the DRAM and COMM discipline committees meet in Fall 2012 to develop equivalent prerequisites and align student learning outcomes. (Requires VP Council charge to DRAM and COMM discipline committees.) 1 Economics The Economic Curriculum Committee would like to recommend a change to the Economic courses as a result of the deletion and removal of ECON 1303 from the Lower Division Academic Course Guide Manual (LDACGM or ACGM) by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS). This change in our district will result in the addition of a new course, ECON 1301 to Tier 1 - Core Foundation under Wellness and the Human Experience category in the core; and ECON 1303 will be removed from the core under the same category. ECON 1303 will be expired in Colleague and no longer available as part of the district course offerings. In addition, the Economics Curriculum Committee also recommends the current Tier 1 - Core Foundation under the Wellness and the Human Experience category be amended for the interim period to include both courses and read, "ECON 1303 or 1301". This will allow both students and staff to transition into the new course, ECON 1301 and new core while these overlapping changes are being implemented in this area. RESPONSES: 1. Do not include ECON 1301 in the Wellness and Human Experience Learning Category, section CB090 in Tier 1. 2. Contact the ECON Discipline Committee and if they agree, add ECON 1301 to the DCCCD Core in the Self and Society Learning Category , section CB080. COMMENTS: ECON 1303 is included in the Wellness and Human Experience Learning Category in response to students’ request to study money and credit management and other personal finance topics. BUSI 1307, Personal Finance, is included in this Learning category for the same reason. ECON 1301 is a survey of microeconomics and macroeconomics. It does not address topics suitable for the Wellness and Human Experience category. It does include topics suitable for the Self and Society Learning Category. It is reasonable to include ECON 1301 with the other ECON courses offered in this category; 2301, 2302, and 2311. ECON 1303 expires in Fall 2013. Until that time, students can enroll and receive core credit for successful completion of the course. See Appendix B for documentation. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: 1. Do not include ECON 1301 in the Wellness and Human Experience Learning Category, section CB090 in Tier 1. 2. CCST recommends ECON Discipline Committee (if they agree) include ECON 1301 in the Self and Society Learning Category, section CB080, and submit request in the 2012-2013 Academic Curriculum Process, to be effective Fall 2013, provided the deadlines are met. 2 Foreign Languages The Office of Educational Affairs is recommending a change to remove selected Foreign Language courses from the DCCCD Core Curriculum. The rationale for this recommendation is that these courses are not part of the district course offerings at any DCCCD location and there are no future plans by any college to offer these courses. Therefore, we recommend these courses be removed and deleted from the core to ensure we do not encounter any compliance issues with SACSCOC and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. RESPONSE: Continue the inclusion of all currently listed foreign language courses in DCCCD Core. COMMENTS: The recommendation to remove some 1XXX and 2XXX foreign languages courses from the DCCCD Core originated from the Office of Educational Affairs. Members of the Foreign Language discipline committee were unaware of this request. Several colleges are planning to offer one or more of these courses in the near future. Courses are also offered as needed in response to community requests. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: No action is required because of the potential changes forthcoming in the 2014 Core. Continue the inclusion of all currently listed foreign language courses in DCCCD Core. The courses recommended for removal are as follows: ARAB 1311 ARAB 1312 CHIN 1311 CHIN 1312 CZEC 1311 CZEC 1312 CZEC 1411 CZEC 1412 CZEC 2311 CZEC 2312 GREE 1411 GREE 1412 JAPN 1311 JAPN 1312 LATI 1311 LATI 1312 LATI 1411 LATI 1412 LATI 2311 LATI 2312 PORT 1311 PORT 1312 PORT 2311 PORT 2312 RUSS 1311 RUSS 2311 RUSS 2312 VIET VIET VIET VIET VIET 1311 1312 1411 2311 2312 3 Government The Government Curriculum Committee would like to recommend a change to be considered as part of the DCCCD Core Curriculum. GOVT Discipline Committee Recommendations Based on the multifaceted discussions regarding the content/outcomes of GOVT 2302 and the stated objectives of the Tier 3 integrated learning experience, the discipline committee submits the following recommendations for your committee to discuss and take action upon: 1.The Core curriculum should have a higher level of rigidity to ensure students have the knowledge, skills and abilities as they move from Tier 1 to Tier 2. AND 2. The designation of Tier 3 should be removed and the Core domain be consolidated into Tier 2. Due to Texas state requirements, GOVT 2302 must appear as a separate requirement to fulfill 6 credit hours in GOVT. We also suggest changing the title of the Core domain from “integrative learning” to “global awareness.” This more accurately reflects the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) and the content of GOVT 2302 per the ACGM. Alternatively, it could be listed with GOVT 2301 under “Self and Society.” OR 3. The Core domain of “Integrative Learning” could be maintained, but with more than one course under that domain. Using the existing structure, there is only one course in Tier 2 that does not have options and is also from another discipline. That course is ENGL 1302, which is an ideal partnering for promoting the outcomes of the Core domain as it is currently worded. a. This pairing may potentially require a district wide support of Learning Communities, which poses a significant logistical and financial challenge. However, it is a common practice to require a learning community course at two- year colleges and is considered a best practice in higher education pedagogy. b. Another option would be for students to take the courses in the same semester, upon the completion of Tier 1. Leaving students with the opportunity to concurrently enroll in Tier 2 courses. This addresses the perception of a third year experience and provides the opportunity for integrated learning to take place and be assessed in more than one course. RESPONSE: 1. The VP Council intends to address the GOVT Discipline Committee recommendation 1. Recommendation not addressed by the CCRC. RESPONSE: 2. Do not move GOVT 2302 into Tier 2 and do not remove the designation of Tier 3. ) See RESULTING CORE – GOVT RECOMMENDATION (OPTION 1) that illustrates the impact of the recommended change. COMMENTS: There is a demonstrable need for the concentration of core completers in a single course to provide for an effective district-wide assessment of core completers. The domain (now called learning category) title is Critical Issues in Local, National, and Global Contexts. This title seems suitable for GOVT 2302. The suggested change in the Tier 3 title from “Integrative Learning “ to “Global Awareness” may not be suitable when the GOVT sequence changes from GOVT 2301/2302 to GOVT 2305/2306. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: 1. The VP Council intends to address the GOVT Discipline Committee recommendation 1. Recommendation not addressed by the CCRC or CCST. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: 2. Do not move GOVT 2302 into Tier 2 and do not remove the designation of Tier 3. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: 3. Do not move any course or courses into Tier 3 to accompany GOVT 2302. RESPONSE: 3. Do not move any course or courses into Tier 3 to accompany GOVT 2302. (See comments below related to the Philosophy recommendation). See RESULTING CORE – GOVT RECOMMENDATION (OPTION 2) that illustrates the impact of the recommended change. COMMENTS: Several goals of ENGL 1302 are to develop critical thinking skills, to promote writing that emphasizes argumentation and persuasion and to write a formal research paper. The CCRC believes that it is beneficial for students to complete ENGL 1302 prior to enrolling in GOVT 2302. The DCCCD Core will need to be refined to address new THECB requirements. Any structural redesign could occur at this time. Note: There are two courses in Tier 2 that do not have options, ENGL 1302 and GOVT 2301. Note: Students can concurrently enroll in Tier 1 and Tier 2 courses and can also concurrently enroll in Tier 2 and the Tier 3 GOVT 2302 course. See Appendix C for documentation & additional rationale. 4 Mathematics The Mathematics Curriculum Committee would like to recommend a change to the calculus course sequence, which will allow our colleges to offer only the 4 credit hour series and/or sequence of calculus courses and conform with many local colleges and universities. These mathematic courses are also included as part of the articulated transfer curriculum for the Voluntary Mechanical Engineering Transfer Compact agreement that currently exist among several higher education institutions within the State of Texas. This change in our district will result in the deletion and/or replacement of two Mathematic courses, MATH 2315 and MATH 2513 from Tier 1 - Core Foundation under the Quantitative Reasoning category; and the addition of two courses, MATH 2413 and MATH 2415 under the same category. These two courses will be expired in Colleague and no longer available as part of the district course offerings. RESPONSE: Change the Calculus courses included in the DCCCD Core in the Quantitative Reasoning Learning Category, section CB020 from a 5-4-3 sequence, MATH 2513, 2414, and 2315 to a 4-4-4 sequence, MATH 2413, 2414, and 2415. Remove MATH 2513 and 2315 from the DCCCD Core and the DCCCD Catalog. COMMENT: The three course calculus sequence is approved for inclusion in the core. This recommendation from the Mathematics Discipline Committee represents a redistribution of credit hours in the three course sequence but does not involve adding or deleting core course content. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: Change the Calculus courses included in the DCCCD Core in the Quantitative Reasoning Learning Category, section CB020, from a 5-4-3 sequence, MATH 2513, 2414, and 2315 to a 4-4-4 sequence, MATH 2413, 2414, and 2415. Remove MATH 2513 and 2315 from the DCCCD Core and the DCCCD Catalog. Changes will be effective in Fall 2012. 5 Music The Music Curriculum Committee would like to recommend a change to the Music courses as a result of the deletion and removal of MUSI 1300 from the Lower Division Academic Course Guide Manual (LDACGM or ACGM) by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS). This change in our district will result in the addition of a new course, MUSI 1301 to Tier 1 - Core Foundation under Wellness and the Human Experience category in the core; and removal of MUSI 1300 from the core under the same category. MUSI 1300 has been expired in Colleague and is no longer available as part of the district course offerings. The new course offers the following opportunities for students to explore who they are and how they relate to the world on a social and intellectual level as shown below: 1. 2. RESPONSES: 1. Add MUSI 1301 to the DCCCD Core in the Wellness and Human Experience Learning Category, section CB090. 2. Remove MUSI 1300 from the DCCCD Core. (Since the course has been removed from the ACGM, it is no longer eligible for inclusion in the core). Even though this course is expired the core code of 090 will be maintained for this course. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: 1. Add MUSI 1301 to the DCCCD Core in the Wellness and Human Experience Learning Category, section CB090. Change will be effective Fall 2012. 2. Remove MUSI 1300 from the DCCCD Core. Change is effective Spring 2012. COMMENTS: MUSI 1301 introduces students to one or more forms of artistic expression as do other courses in this learning category. See Appendix D for documentation Social - students interact with other students in a class setting, including working with teams. Intellectual - students are taught foundational material that encourages the application of new knowledge immediately and in conjunction with other learning; this course is also pertinent in the preparation for continued music study. 6 Philosophy The Philosophy Curriculum Committee would like to recommend two Philosophy courses, PHIL 2307 and PHIL 2318 for specific designations as potential Tier 3 courses to supplement the one course currently available in Tier 3. Reclassification of these courses as additional alternatives in Tier 3 will allow for the highest levels of critical thinking and integrative learning that allow students to demonstrate the development of the writing, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, personal responsibility and social responsibility competencies to be adopted by the THECB. Consequently, they offer excellent opportunity for assessment of student competency in achieving general education and State mandated competencies. Placement of these courses in Tier 3 should facilitate assessment of students who are graduating or nearing graduation with measurements embedded in these courses. RESPONSE: Do not move PHIL 2307 and 2318 from the DCCCD Core Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience Learning category, section CB040 to a Tier 3. COMMENTS: To create a new learning category that contains PHIL 2307 and 2318 in Tier 3 results in adding three credit hours to the DCCCD Core Curriculum if the other courses in the Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience Learning category, section CB040 are retained in Tier 2. To avoid adding credit hours to the DCCCD Core, one of two options could be exercised: remove the Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience Learning category, section CB040 (and all other courses listed) from the core OR move the entire learning category, with all of its courses to Tier 3. The first option to remove the CB040 portion of this learning category from the core is obviously unacceptable (literature, 2XXX level foreign language, etc.) The other option to move the CB040 portion of the learning category to Tier 3 is acceptable, but students completing the core will be dispersed in a large number of Tier 3 courses. This makes the THECB mandated districtwide assessment of core completers very challenging. See RESULTING CORE – PHILOSOPHY RECOOMENDATION S (OPTIONS 3, 4, and 5) to illustrate the impact of the recommended changes. RECOMMENDATION TO VP COUNCIL: Do not move PHIL 2307 and 2318 from the DCCCD Core Humanity, Creativity, and the Aesthetic Experience Learning category, section CB040 to Tier 3. 7 APPENDIX A DCCCD CATALOG CONTENT: COMM 2366 (3 Credit Hours) Course not offered this year at any DCCCD college. Course Description: In this course students refine the writing, research, and reading skills introduced in English 1301. A related goal is the development of critical thinking skills. Writing assignments emphasize argumentation and persuasion. Students will also write a formal research paper. (3 Lec.) Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 2313015112 Elaborated Rationale related to GOVT 2302 and Tier 3 1. Two GOVT courses are required by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, THECB, for inclusion in the state mandated core curriculum. The DCCCD Core Curriculum lists one course, GOVT 2301 in Tier 2 and the other course, GOVT 2302 in Tier 3. Each course is a “standalone” course, that is, there are no other options. (The GOVT 2301 and 2302 sequence will be replaced with GOVT 2305 and 2306 in the near future). 2. The THECB states that “a core curriculum should contain courses that provide multiple perspectives about the individual and the world in which he or she lives; that stimulate a capacity to discuss and reflect upon individual, political, and social aspects of life so students understand ways in which to exercise responsible citizenship; and that enable students to integrate knowledge and understand the interrelationships of the disciplines.” The selection of GOVT 2302 in Tier 3 as an Integrative Learning course addresses multiple aspects of this stated goal. Topics listed in the Academic Course Guide Manual, ACGM, appropriate for GOVT 2302 include civil rights and liberties, domestic policies, foreign relations and national defense. 3. It has been suggested that the cluster of courses, labeled CB040 in the Learning Category “Humanity, Creativity and the Human Experience,” replace GOVT 2302 (GOVT 2302 would be moved to Tier 2) or move to Tier 3 with GOVT 2302. This cluster contains some courses that are inappropriate for an integrative experience, including most of the Foreign Language courses. Inappropriate courses would have to be removed from the Core, or offered as Institutional Options. 4. Selecting a single course to add to Tier 3 along with GOVT 2302, such as a literature course, would add three hours to the core. Forthcoming THECB requirements will limit the core to 42 hours. This option would create a 45 hour DCCCD core, which will not be allowed. 5. Fostering integrative learning requires some course re-design and professional development. It will be easier at the onset to develop, encourage and support culminating integrative learning experiences in a single course, rather than a broad list of courses and a larger pool of faculty. 6. The THECB requires that the DCCCD assess the Core Curriculum, not as individual colleges, but as a district. It will be easier to “capture” and assess core completers if they are enrolled in a single required Tier 3 course, than if they are enrolled in one of 20 – 25 different courses. Developing, administering, and scoring multiple instruments to assess core objectives in a broad array of courses are time consuming and labor intensive. Correlating data from multiple courses, colleges and instruments is also challenging. 10 APPENDIX D DCCCD CATALOG CONTENT: MUSI 1301 (3 Credit Hours) New course added November 22, 2011 Offered at BHC, CVC, EFC, ECC, MVC, NLC, RLC.
