Capitol College Welcomes New Vice President for Advancement,
Dr. Donna Thomas
LAUREL, MD (October 1, 2012) – Capitol College is pleased to welcome its newest vice
president for advancement, Dr. Donna Thomas. Thomas has extensive fundraising experience
and has worked in numerous financial development positions throughout her career.
Most recently, Thomas held the title of director of development at the China Institute. In that
role, she was responsible for managing annual, special and capital campaigns, fostering
corporate and foundation relations, as well as designing and implementing special events.
“We are most pleased to have Dr. Donna Thomas join our leadership team at the college,” Dr.
Michael T. Wood, president, said. “Thomas brings a wealth of experience in advancement for
schools and non-profit institutes. She also has a nice combination of government, industry and
international experience which will serve the college well.”
The primary responsibilities of the vice president for advancement are to implement and manage
strategies that expand the college’s relationships and increase funds; guide the research,
identification, cultivation and solicitation of new donors; provide strategic leadership to the
marketing and communications office; and oversee the grant proposing and writing processes.
Thomas has also held the titles of consultant and vice president for development at the Freedoms
Foundation, director of development at Lycée Français de New York, director of development at
Don Bosco Preparatory School, director of fundraising and community relations at Boston Aging
Concerns, and the director of development for the Parent Program in the office of advancement
at Boston University.
Thomas holds a doctorate in psychology from Tuft’s University, as well as master of library
science degree and a bachelor of arts in psychology, both from Simmons College.
Capitol College is the only independent college in Maryland dedicated to education in
engineering, computer science, information technology and business through practices of
leadership and innovation. Founded in 1927, Capitol offers associate, bachelor’s and master's
degrees, a Doctor of Science in Information Assurance, professional development training and
certificates. Academic programs are grounded in centers of excellence; these include the Space
