ART CONTEST CATEGORIES The art contest is subdivided into the following thirteen categories. Determine into which category your project belongs and indicate that category on the preregistration form. Only preregistered entries will be allowed to compete. In some categories, pictures of original objects must accompany entries. An entry without such a picture will be disqualified. Such pictures need not be original photographs, but may be photocopied from source books; they need only to be clear. If the book itself that contains the picture is used to supply the picture, be sure the proper page is displayed with the entry. 1. REPLICA A miniature (i.e., smaller than the actual size of the original) reproductions of any implement, a utensil, piece of equipment, or costume used in ancient Greece or Rome (e.g., a Roman sword and shield, a doll dressed as a legionary soldier or as the emperor Augustus, a lamp, sandal, object or jewelry, bowls, sieges machine, etc.) A picture of the original must accompany the entry. All parts of the replica must be made by the entrant except that a replica costume may be displayed on a doll, but it must be clearly stated that the entry is the costume only. 2. NEEDLEWORK An original design or a rendering of an ancient design or picture done on cloth, canvas, etc. using a technique such as embroidery, quilting, sewing, bargello, needlepoint, etc. Commercial kits are not acceptable. Both the design and the execution must be done by the entrant. The picture or design that is rendered must be drawn or designed by the entrant; it may not be photocopied or enlarged from a book or photo, transferred to cloth, then stitched, etc. If the project is a rendering of an ancient design, a picture of the original must accompany the entry. 3. PAINTING An original work or a rendering of an ancient work designed and executed by the entrant using a medium such as watercolor, oil, or tempera. Commercial kits are not acceptable. The picture or design that is rendered must designed by the entrant; it may not be photocopied or enlarged from a book or photo, transferred to canvas, etc., the painted, etc. If the entry is a rendering of an ancient work, a picture of the original must accompany the entry. 4. DRAWING An original work or rendering of an ancient work designed and executed by the entrant using a medium such as charcoal, pencil, pen, and ink, etc. The picture or design that is rendered must be drawn by the entrant; it may not be photocopied or enlarged from a book or photo. If the entry is a rendering of an ancient work, a picture of the original must accompany the entry. 5. SCULPTURE An original sculpture or a rendering of an ancient statue in wood, stone, clay, metal, etc. Both the design and the execution must be done by the entrant. If the entry is a rendering of an ancient work, a picture of the original must accompany the entry. 6. MOSAIC An original design or a rendering of an ancient design done in mosaic fashion with glass, stone, a tile, seeds, etc. The picture or design that is done must be drawn by the entrant; it may not be photocopied or enlarged from a book or photo, then mosaiced. Commercial kits are not acceptable. If the entry is a rendering of an ancient design or mosaic, a picture of the original must accompany the entry. 7. MODEL A scaled reproduction of a Greek or Roman architectural structure, for example a temple, a bath, an aqueduct, etc. A picture of the original structure or of the reconstruction of the original structure used in making the model must accompany the entry. 8. CERAMICS An original work based on a classical subject or rendering of an ancient artifact in clay or glass. The design and execution must be done by the entrant. Painting on precast ceramics does not fit in this division; this would be in the Miscellaneous division. If the entry is a rendering of an ancient work, a picture of the original must accompany the entry. 9. CHAPTER SCRAPBOOK The scrapbook will be from the current school year. It will be judged on cover, continuity of theme, originality, neatness, and overall attractiveness. 10. POSTER Posters must be 22 x 28 inches to avoid disqualification and must sell an idea, a motto, or a slogan in English in an original and creative way. They must show relevance to Latin, Greek, JCL or the classical past. The poster may be used to attract membership into JCL. Do NOT use any copyrighted characters or ideas. The posters may be drawn which are done entirely by hand; or they may be constructed posters which have material attached to them. Materials might include stickers, computer generated pictures or text, construction paper, photographs. (Be sure to credit all programs and non-original sources.) (Criteria for judging are: originality/creativity, degree of skill, design and color, accuracy/authenticity, adherence to classical theme, neatness, adherence to rules, correct spelling and Latin/English usage, and overall effect.) 11. PHOTOGRAPHY Photographs may be traditional or computer-enhanced. Traditional photographs may be taken either with a traditional or digital camera. The only thing that can be done to a photograph is printing it with nothing added to the picture after it is printed. Computer- enhanced photography involves modifications to a photograph after it is taken and then scanned or loaded into a computer. It may include changing the color, background, superimposing one photo over another, etc. via a computer. Entrants must indicate whether they are entering a traditional or computer-enhanced photograph and should also indicate any special effects used in taking the picture or in the darkroom when printing it or the enhancement process for computer generated material on a 3x5 card. All materials must be the original work of the entrant. (Criteria for judging are: classical theme, technical execution, content of photo, composition, and visual impact.) 12. T-SHIRT Each school may turn in one T-shirt which must have been designed by students/student from that school. No copyrighted or syndicated characters or ideas may be used. T-shirts will be judged on originality/creativity, theme, artistic design, use of color, and overall aesthetic value. 13. MISCELLANEOUS Anything that does not fit into any of the above categories. Keep in mind that this is an ART contest.
