Don Norman
For many years, many of us who bear the Norman surname have believed that
our name originated in France. This is quite possible, however, such an
origin would be ancient indeed, since our ancestry has been traced to James
Norman, who was born in Holbrook, Derby, England about 1678. Derby is North
West of London, near Nottingham.

James Norman was born in Holbrook, Duffield, Derby, England about 1678
and died there May 7, 1725. His wife's name was Elizabeth. The christening
dates of their children are from the Duffield Parish Register and were
somewhat later than the children's birth dates.

England. He was christened in Derby parish February 20 of 1747 or
1748. He married Lydia Brown in Duffield December 31, 1774. Lydia
was born about 1753.

James Norman, a son of John and Lydia (Brown) Norman, was born in
Duffield, Derby, England in 1776 and was christened at Derby parish May 19,
1776. At this writing, it is not known when or how James came to America. We
do know that he married Mary Nedley, who was born in 1775 in Virginia. In
1810, the Randolph County VA (WV) Census listed the 12 member family of James
Norman.
James "Jimmy" Norman (1910-1982), son of Elmer Dotson Norman, helped
build the two-story stone "Norman Cottage" in Normantown, WV just west of the
school on US 33/119. His grandfather, James Paul Norman, told how James, Mary,
and one son, Semore, came over the mountains by wagon, from present-day
Barbour County WV, to settle in the fertile valleys sometimes called "the blue
grass belt of WV" prior to 1830. They spent their first winter on the Left
Fork of Steer Creek, in a bark lean-to, built in a small ravine just below the
present road near where Richard Parsons now lives. The following year, they
built a house at the forks of White Oak Camp Run and the Left Fork of Steer
Creek. For many years a large stone stood in the meadow marking the site of
their home. Then one hot summer day, Jimmy Norman removed it. In his words,
"I had skinned my knuckles just one too many times, trying to maneuver the
horses and equipment around that rock." According to Jimmy, James received a
1,000 acres land grant from the Governor of Virginia.
Jimmy recalled: "I can show you every corner." The stone house is on the
original grant. James also received a grant in 1831 from the Governor of
Virginia for 45 acres on Steer Creek, and in 1837 another tract of 50 acres on
Steer Run. Daniel DeWeese (1821-1905), a Confederate Civil War Veteran and
lifelong resident of Gilmer and Calhoun Counties, recalled James Norman in his
1904 book, "Recollections and Experiences of a Lifetime":
"During the Summer of 1843, one Sunday at prayer meeting, which was
being conducted at the residence of Wm. Boggs, James Norman, a man of devout
mind and very reserved and timid, a gray haired pilgrim whose sands of time
were nearly run, in the course of the services arose and for the first time he
was ever known to speak in public gave such a profound and convincing
exhortation that all who were present were soul feelingly stirred and sensibly
impressed. "I myself being so forcibly imbued and touched by Father Norman's
appeal that not long after I joined the Church and was baptized in Steer Creek
just below the forks of Steer Creek at Stumptown by the Rev. Carr Bailey who
was pastor of Mt. Pisgah Church from 1842 to 1844 and was received into full
fellowship and continued a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church at
Stumptown, Gilmer County, then Virginia, now WV, over fourteen years."
James and Mary (Nedley) Norman were enumerated in the 1850 Census
of Gilmer County (He was 74 and she 75). James wrote his will June 10, 1852
and died less than a month later on July 6, 1852. His will is recorded in
Will Book l, Page 8 at the Gilmer County Court House, Glenville, WV
I JAMES NORMAN of the County of Gilmer and State of Virginia,
farmer, do make and publish this my last will and testament and I
direct that my body be decently interred according to the rites and
ceremonies of the regular Baptist Church, and that my funeral be
conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and station in
life, and as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to entrust
me with, I dispose of the same as follows: First, I direct that all my
debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as
possible out of the first moneys that shall come in to the hands of my
Executors from any portion of my estate. Also I direct that a fair
valuation or appraisement be made by three judicious neighbors, of all
my said estate including my household furniture, and after being
signed with their names, that a copy of the same be given to each of
my Executors. Also I direct that all my farming utensils and personal
property be sold by public auction by my Executors on a reasonable
credit taking bond and security from the purchasers in order to secure
the payment thereof.
In order to effectuate this my intentions I hereby rest in my
Executors full power and authority to collect all my debts due me and
the amount of my personal estate and secure the same to be by them
applied to the maintenance of my loving wife if she shall be living at
the time of my decease. I also in like manner direct that the whole of
my household furniture shall be and remain the absolute property of my
beloved wife. If she shall not survive me, then that the same be sold
with the balance of my personal property to be equally divided amongst
my heirs share and share alike, so soon as the same shall come into
the hands of my Executors.
I also direct that if any amount of my estate shall remain in the
hands of my Executors after the decease of my beloved wife that the
same be equally divided as I have before described. I do hereby make
and ordain my esteemed son Semore Norman and James E. Norman Executors
of this my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I James Norman the testator, to this will
written on one sheet of paper, set my hand and seal this tenth day of
June one thousand eight hundred and fifty two.

Gilmer County Court, July Term 1852
l. The Last will and testament of James Norman deceased was
proven by the oath of Daniel D. Bush and A. J. Norman, two of the
witnesses hereto, and is ordered to be recorded. James E. Norman, an
executor named therein refused to qualify as executor, therefore on
the motion of Seamor Norman, one of the Executors named in said will
who took the oath of an executor, and together with Levi Johnson and
Samuel L. Hays his sureity, entered into and acknowledged a bond in
the penalty of $800 dollars, conditioned as the law directs.
Certificate is granted him for obtaining probate of the said will in

death is not recorded, nor is her grave marked (she may occupy an
unmarked grave beside her husband).

John Norman, a son of James and Mary (Nedley) Norman, was born in
1798. On October 24, 1816, John Norman, a shoemaker by trade, married
Nancy Montgomery in Randolph County VA (WV). Nancy died about 1840
and John married Orinda Holbert, February 1, 1842, in Lewis County VA
(WV). By 1860 John Norman had moved to Lewis County VA (WV), where on
June 11, 1860, near Weston, census taker Alfred H. Jackson recorded
John's family.
Little else is known of John Norman. His wife, Orinda owned
land on Polk Creek, Lewis County VA (WV) near Weston. A John Norman is
buried beside James Norman in the Meadows Cemetery, near Normantown
WV. It may be he.

James Nedley Norman, a son of James and Mary (Nedley) Norman, was
born 1801 in Virginia. He married Catherine Summers May 15, 1822, in
Randolph County VA (WV). He was elected first Sheriff of Calhoun
County VA (WV) in 1856, and he then appointed two of his sons, Alpheus
and Philip, as his deputies.

about 1835. Jemima, a daughter of Michael III and Magdalene
(Richards) Stump, was born January 18, 1804 and died December 25,
1841. Seamore married Sarah Bush July 29, 1842. Sarah, a daughter of
Paulser and Elizabeth (Heckert) Bush, was born in Lewis County VA (WV)
in 1824.
Seamore operated the first tavern in Normantown Virginia. He is
buried on a high hill overlooking Normantown WV.

Sarah Rebecca Norman, a daughter of John and Nancy (Montgomery)
Norman, was born in 1822 and died about 1852 in Roane County VA (WV).
She married William H. "Pete" Bush. William, a son of Paulcer and
Elizabeth (Heckert) Bush, was born in Gilmer County VA (WV) in 1824.
After Sarah died, "Pete" then married Lucinda Butcher. Lucinda died
and he then married Mary Brannon. "Pete" at least eight children by
his second and third wives, but we have no idea which children belong
to which wife.

Elijah Green Norman, a son of John and Nancy (Montgomery) Norman, was
born in Lewis County VA October 25, 1832 and died in Gilmer County WV in March
23, 1885. He married Barbara Cyrus in Lawrence County KY March 21, 1852.
Barbara, a daughter of Jesse and Sally (White) Cyrus, was born in Lawrence
County KY in 1832 and died in childbirth in Tazewell County VA December 8,
1852.
He married Edith Ann Hacker in Gilmer County VA (WV) October 5, 1854.
Edith, a daughter of Alexander West and Rachel (Cunningham) Hacker, was born
in Harrison County VA (WV) in July 1837 and died in Gilmer County September
22, 1901.
In the 1880 Census of Gilmer County, they had ten children and he
was running the county poor house.
Edith is listed as a 62 year old widow in the 1900 Gilmer county WV
census. She was the mother of 15 children, with 11 living.

James Emmit Norman, a son of John and Nancy (Montgomery) Norman,
was born December 5, 1824 in Randolph County VA (WV) and died December
19, 1893 at Auburn, Ritchie County WV, where he had operated a tannery
for many years. He married Tamar Riddle in Lewis County VA (WV).
Tamar, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Holbert) Riddle, was born in
Lewis County VA (WV) about 1826.
James enlisted in the Union Army at Wheeling VA (WV), May 6,
1862 and served in Company G, 10th W.Va. Infantry. He was the first
Postmaster of Normantown, VA from June 20, 1853 until May 20, 1859.
James reportedly moved to Ritchie County WV and operated a tannery
at Auburn, WV for many years.

Andrew Jackson Norman was born 1827, in Virginia, son of John and Nancy
(Montgomery) Norman.
Andrew contracted Typhoid Fever when a small child. Frozen sod was
pressed to both sides of his head to control the high fever. He survived the
fever,but was deaf the rest of his life. He was said to carry a small slate
for people to write on when he couldn't understand them. He also taught
children with the slate.
Many years ago Escue Carl Norman spent the night in a boarding house in
Weston, WV. An elderly lady noted his name and told how Andrew J. Norman had
made her first pair of shoes, when she was a child. They had no nails.
Andrew J. Norman was married to Amanda "Monoka" Arnold in Gilmer County
Virginia (WV) on July 18, 1852, by S.M. Brannon. Amanda, a daughter of Isaac
and Mary Arnold, was born in Virginia December 29 1833 and died in Gilmer
County VA (WV) May 14, 1865. Andrew and Amanda bought a 21 acre farm on the
left fork of White Oak Camp Run near Normantown, WV In September 1862 Andrew
was robbed by three men claiming to be Confederate soldiers. He brought suit
against them in Ritchie County. The charge was that they "did with force and
arms seize, take, detain and carry away two hounds, and other property of the
value of Eight Hundred Dollars." There is no record that the case was ever
prosecuted.
These people may well have been part of any of the loosely organized
groups of Confederate guerrillas who roamed that area during the early years
of the Civil War. Although they were retroactively granted Army status by the
governor of Virginia, they seemed to prey on the residents of the area, with
little actual military activity against the Union forces.
After Monoka died, Andrew left his farm, which was sold at public auction
on June 1, 1880 to Henry L. Gaston for 94 cents delinquent taxes.
Susan Allen, born 1845 in Jackson County, Va (now WV) may have been
visiting her brother, Hiram Allen at his home in Barbecue Fork of Grass Run
when she met Andrew Norman. They were soon married.
Andrew J. Norman was in Ritchie County WV on May 12, 1894, where
he prepared an affidavit on behalf of his sister-in-law, Tamar Norman.
Tamar was attempting to obtain a Civil War widow's pension. This is
the last written record of Andrew J. Norman.
Savilla Conrad remembered having seen Andrew Jackson Norman near Rosedale,
WV sometime after 1900. As she recalled, "We lived 10 miles above Rosedale.
Mable (born Apr 5, 1908) was less than two years old when old deaf Andy Norman
came walking through. He tried to ask directions to Frametown, but I couldn't
understand him. He wrote on a slate and I turned it over and wrote directions
on the back. He had been a portly man, but wasn't carrying much flesh at that
time."
Susan died in Ohio in 1910. Andrew went to OK and lived with his son
Theodore and died there.

October 17, 1899.

Lucinda Marks in Gilmer County Va (WV) March 21, 1851. Lucinda, a
daughter of John and Rebecca (Norman) [Greenleaf] Marks, was born in
Harrison county Virginia (WV) about 1833 and apparently died about
1860. James married Martha F. Moss in Gilmer County July 8, 1862.
Martha was born in 1842 in Buckingham County VA.

Magdalene Barnhouse in Gilmer County VA (WV) October 20, 1855. Mary,
a daughter of George W. and Elizabeth Barnhouse, was born in Randolph
County VA (WV) about 1836.
Thomas apparently died before 1870. Mary is listed in her
father's household in the 1870 Gilmer County WV census.

Richard James Norman, a son of James Nedley and Catherine (Summers)
Norman, was born in Randolph County VA (WV) about 1824 and died in
Gilmer County WV May 20, 1900. He married Rebecca A. Sell in Randolph
County VA September 11, 1842. Rebecca was born January 1, 1829 and died
August 11, 1915 in Calhoun County WV.
Richard enlisted in Co H 1st VA Volunteer Infanty at Wheeling, WV
October 1, 1861. He contracted measles at Romney, VA in December 1861.
He was sent to Wheeling to the hospital January 8, 1862 and remained
there until May 6, 1862, when he was discharged.
He applied for a pension in Monroe County OH January 21, 1873. His
widow applied for a widows pension in Calhoun County WV August 23, 1900.
Rebecca is listed in the household of her son in law George W.
Richards in the 1900 Calhoun County WV census. She is a 77 year old
widow, born in MD. She is the mother of 10 children, all living.

Alpheus Norman, a son of James Nedley and Catherine (Summers)
Norman, was born at Normantown VA (WV) December 10, 1824 and died in
Calhoun county WV October 10, 1899. He married Elizabeth Bunner June
5, 1845. Elizabeth was born in 1820 and died August 5, 1859.
Alpheus married Catherine (Jarvis) Goldsmith, a daughter of Thomas
Figgins and Ailsey Bentley (Connally) Jarvis and the widow of James Goldsmith
in Calhoun County VA (WV) February 29, 1860. Catherine was born March 7, 1828
and died August 26, 1886.
Alpheus and Catherine had no children of their own, but adopted
two. There were also at least two children of James Goldsmith.
A story by Mildred M. KcKenzie in the “Clay County Free Press’m for July
14, 2004 relates that Catherine Norman, John W. Goldsmith and Csrah C.
Goldsmith deeded property to the Board of Education for Washington Township,
Calhoun County WV December 15, 1869 for Oka WV school.

Philip Norman, a son of James Nedley and Catharine (Summers)
Norman, was born in Lewis County VA (WV) February 10, 1827 and died in
Webster County WV May 8, 1900. He married Mary Jane Ferrell in Gilmer
County VA (WV) July 16, 1849. Mary, who was probably a daughter of
Thomas Griggs and Sarah Susan (Bunner) Ferrell, was born in Virginia
about 1834 and died about 1870.
Philip married Ruth A. Moats February 5, 1875 in Calhoun County
WV. Ruth, a daughter of Henry and Effa Moats, was born in Ritchie
County VA (WV) in December 1847 and died in OR September 4, 1928.
Philip and Ruth moved to Webster County WV. Alfred Clay's father
said that Ruth left Philip and that Philip hired Catherine Robinson as
house keeper. After some time, Ruth returned, but Philip kept
Catherine. Philip and Catherine had six children. Catherine, a
daughter of William and Elizabeth Robinson, was born in Barbour County
VA (WV) May 9, 1844 and died in Nicholas County WV in 1930.

County VA (WV) September 22, 1860. Asenith, a daughter of Jacob and
Nancy (McCune) Booher was born in 1842 in Wirt County, VA (WV). She
died on May 24, 1927.

Henry Bell Norman, a son of James Nedley and Catherine (Summers)
Norman, was born in Lewis County VA (WV) July 9, 1842 and died in
Centralia, Lewis County WA January 6, 1932. He married Rachel Ferrell
in 1861. Rachel, a daughter of Hiram and Matilda Ferrell, was born
about 1845. Apparently the marriage did not last, since Henry married
Louisa Caroline Cornell in Calhoun County WV August 9, 1865 and Rachel
married William Edgar Bell December 23, 1866.
Henry enlisted in the Union Army, Co B 11th W.Va. Volunteer
Infantry October 26, 1861 and was discharged at Cedar Creek, VA
November 11, 1864.
Henry and Louisa lived in Calhoun County WV until 1881 and are
listed in the 1870 and 1880 census for that county. In 1881, they
moved to Webster County and were living at Tyler in March of 1907 and
in Cowen in 1915.
Henry suffered an attack of paralysis in 1923 and by 1924 he and
Louisa were living in Lewis County WA. Henry's death certificate says
that he was survived by his wife Mary L. Norman. Was Louisa Mary
Louisa?

Andrew Harrison Norman was born December 28, 1867, in Gilmer County, WV,
a son of Andrew Jackson and Susanna (Allen) Norman. He was married to Mary
Catherine Cottrell on October 29, 1891 by Z. A. Bollinger, in Gilmer County.
Catheine, a daughter of Nathan and Nancy Jane (Schoolcraft) Cottrill, was born
in 1874 and died August 26, 1958.
"Andy" was a farmer and timberman. He worked as a teamster and "drifted"
timber for different contractors. He worked for the Interstate Cooperage
Company during the time that company was operating in Gilmer County.
"Andy" and Catherine lived on the Right Fork of Steer Creek, Gilmer
County, WV, about a quarter mile downstream from the intersection of the
Tanner's Fork road, at the spot where Brock Stewart lives in 1987. They
lived in a small house there from about 1897 until 1914, when they moved
into the two story log house that still stands. according to Ralph
Perrine, the family lived in the log house from 1914 until 1917.
When the estate of Eliza Shock, widow of Alexander Shock, was
settled, the property passed into the hands of Fletcher H. Stout. The
new owner requested "Andy" and Catherine to move, on the grounds that
their continued occupancy might give them "squattter's rights" to the
property. Then they moved to the head of Saw Pit Run, a tributary of
Tanner's Fork in the Spring of 1917.
As Coy Norman said, they practically moved into the woods in the
head of Saw Pit. They cleared land and built barns and other
outbuildings and planted an apple orchard. They lived there until the
1940's, when their failing health caused them move into a house on
their son Escue's farm near Stumptown, WV. "Andy" died August 3, 1953
and Catherine on August 26, 1958. Both are buried in the Collins
Community Cemetery at Stumptown, WV.
To the best of this writer's knowledge, "Andy" Norman was the
last resident of the Shock, WV, community to be buried in a home made
casket. "Andy" had requested Grover C. Miller to make his casket many
years before his death, and had cut lumber for the purpose. For people
of "Andy" and Grover's generation, such a promise and such foresight
in cutting lumber was not unusual; it was simply good preparation for
the inevitable.
The writer recalls "Andy" relating Grover's promise and telling
of the stored lumber some few years before his death, as though all
was in order and nothing amiss in his approaching death. When the time
came, Grover did make the casket. The making of a casket in the
Shock, WV community at that time was not the simple nailing together
of a few planks. The making of a casket had evolved from being simply
a container for a corpse to being a measure of the regard of the
builder for the deceased and the greatest care and craftsmanship that
the builder was capable of went into the product. Since power tools
were almost unknown in those days, building a casket was an around the
clock task of from twenty four to thirty six hours, with all available
hands busy sawing, ripping, planing, sanding, sewing, drilling and
fitting.
The writer remembers "Andy's" casket as being an excellent piece
of work and a worthy tribute to the regard of one man for another.

Carey L. Norman was born in 1877, a son of Andrew Jackson and Susanna
(Allen) Norman. In the 1900 Census of Washington District, Calhoun County, he
was working on the farm of Oscar Chenoweth. (He reported that he was 20 years
old, having been born in October 1879. He married Delphia Riffle on March 30,
1907. Delphia, a daughter of James and Susan (Armstrong) Riffle, was born
about 1886. Carey and Delphia both perished October 15, 1960 when their Powell
Mountain home in Nicholas County WV was destroyed by fire. They are buried in
the Collins Community Cemetery at Stumptown, WV along with their daughter
and her husband.

Foster Norman was born at Shock, WV, April 7, 1896. a son of Andrew H.
and Mary Catherine (Cottrill) Norman. Foster served in the U.S. Army during
World War I and worked in many of the timber and railroading camps in the
mountains of Southern WV. For several years, he operated his own timber
business. Sometime around 1950, he joined the Koppers Company and worked for
them until his retirement. He married Autie Groves, who was born September 21,
1899, a daughter of Zebulon Floyd and Almira (Carpenter) Groves. Foster died
July 23, 1976 and Autie August 9, 1984. They are buried in the Collins
Community Cemetery at Stumptown, WV.

Boyd Norman was born at Shock, WV, December 24, 1899, son of Andrew
Harrison and Mary Catherine (Cottrill) Norman. Boyd served in the U.S. Army
in France during World War I. He worked in the timber and railroad camps of
Southern WV and operated a timber business in partnership with his brother
Escue for several years. For several years before his retirement, he operated
a farm on Tanner's Fork of Steer Creek. Boyd married Ella Ward March 5, 1924.
Ella, a daughter of George and Sarah (Triplett) Ward, was born in Clay County
WV January 20, 1909 and died in Roane County WV July 26, 1997. Boyd died
November 17, 1978. Ella and Boyd are buried in the Collins Community
cemetery at Stumptown, WV.
Boyd and Bethel Frame were parents of LaRond, born in Gilmer County WV
October 20, 1938. LaRond was later adopted by Roy Conley. He married Betty
Robertson September 23, 1943. Morre information about their family is found in
“Descendants of LaRond Conley.”

Coy Norman was born at Shock, Gilmer County WV July 29, 1901, son of
Andrew Harrison and Mary Catherine (Cottrill) Norman. Coy left Gilmer County
December 26, 1919 in the company of "Little Tom" Cottrill to find work in the
lumber camps of "the mountains" of Nicholas County, WV. He worked in the
lumber and railroad camps of Southern WV before his marriage and was employed
by Columbia Gas System 22 years before his retirement in 1963.
On June 6, 1929, he married Minnie Elmira Miller, daughter of Grover C.
and Oe (Minney) Miller. Minnie died November 17, 1970 and Coy October 24,
1983. They are buried in the Miller cemetery on Big Lick of Tanner's Fork of
Steer Creek.

James Monroe Norman, a son of Andrew Harrison and Mary Catherine
(COttrill) Norman, was born at Shock, WV August 27, 1914 and died at
GRantsville, WV August 5, 1989.
"Mon" worked on timber and construction jobs before joining the Army in
1940. He retired from the Army with 22 years service and worked as a
maintenance man for Glenville State college 15 years before retiring
permanently.
"Mon" married Bonnie Jean Farrell October 15, 1932 at the home of A.O.
Barton in Gilmer County, WV. Bonnie, a daughter of William Henry and
Theodosia (Burns) Ferrell, was born in Gilmer County WV October 8, 1915 and
died in Lewis County WV June 25 2004. They were divorced in 1946. "Mon" then
married Dorothy Bell. The couple were divorced and he married Virginia Helen
Nicholson. Helen, a daughter of Henry Dow and Ona (Furr) Nicholson, was born
October 2, 1925 and died July 31, 1986.
