Students support Cathedral Appeal: documentary adds to MAKE
YOUR MARK campaign
Guildford Cathedral Appeal, which has a final £500,000 left to raise of its
£7m target for urgent repairs and development, has received a boost from
students at the University of Surrey who’ve made a documentary about the
Cathedral and its Appeal.
As part of their undergraduate media studies course, Samantha Jewiss, Jade Small and
Nicole Cheng, produced a 10 minute documentary, and short 1 minute clip which will be
used to help promote the Cathedral Appeal. The documentary, which includes interviews
with the Dean, Archivist and Chief Guide, highlights the amazing story of the People’s
Cathedral.
Samantha said “We were really
pleased to be able to produce our
documentary about the Cathedral and
its Appeal. The Cathedral is very
important to us and students alike,
therefore it was a rewarding project to
work on. The documentary was an
exciting opportunity to transfer the
skills from our degree into something
with a purpose – raising awareness
about a vital aspect of Guildford. We
were very happy to be able to MAKE
OUR MARK.”
Siân Newton, Fundraising & Appeal Director at the Cathedral said: “We are so grateful to
Samantha, Jade and Nicole for working with the Cathedral on this project. It’s one of many
examples of partnership between the Cathedral and University. It’s great to see a new
generation’s perspective on the Cathedral and its vital place in the community. “
“The documentary is yet another way local people have joined in our MAKE YOUR MARK
campaign. Our fundraising is now focused on raising the £1/2m needed to complete the
Appeal“.
Remaining funds are needed for repairs and improvements, such as the overdue restoration
of the Cathedral organ. These vital components of the Appeal will enable the Cathedral to
serve the community in the twenty-first century through art, music and outreach.

Notes to the Editor
Guildford Cathedral was built in the early 20th Century. It is the last Church of England
cathedral consecrated on a new site (in 1961) and is a unique design by Sir Edward Maufe,
combining Gothic tradition with a simple aesthetic of space and light. Standing on Stag Hill,
visible for many miles, it has become a landmark building for Guildford and the surrounding
areas.
More than 100,000 people are welcomed to the Cathedral each year.
The MAKE YOUR MARK campaign is part of, and is raising funds for, the Guildford
Cathedral Appeal which aims to raise £7m for urgent repairs and improvements.
