Solid Earth Study Guide-Final Investigations 1-5
Students should know:
*What type of rock is limestone? (Investigation 3, Investigation 4)
*How freezing and melting cause a rock to weather (Investigation 5)
*Acid rain is an example of chemical weathering
(Investigation 5)
*What mineral fizzes when exposed to an acid?
(Investigation 3)
*All of the parts of the rock cycle
(Investigation 4)
*Compare/contrast the movement of earth materials in a regular flood vs. a flash flood
(Investigation 5)
*Know that basic earth materials that cannot be broken down any further are called minerals
(Investigation 1)
*Be able to choose the best location to build a house so that it won’t be affected by erosion
(Investigation 5)
*If a mineral can be scratched by an aluminum nail that it can also be scratched by a paper
clip (Investigation 4)
*That pebbles have a greater mass than sand or clay and therefore will be deposited closer
to shore than clay (Investigation 5)
*They should be able to identify a mineral based on its color, streak color, and metallic or
non-metallic properties. They will have a mineral property chart to refer to (Investigation 3)
*Know that a rock is a mixture of different (minerals, ingredients, materials, etc.)(Investigation 1)
*Know that a sand dune will be most affected by wind (Investigation 5)
Tips for Success!
Concepts should be reviewed, captured on this study guide or other paper. Please refer to
your Science Notebook, Notes, and textbook. Below is the page range for each
Investigation. Students can refer the page ranges below in preparing for the assessment. The
Assessment is Open Note, Open Notebook so please make sure your notes are
complete!
Investigation 1 182-194
Investigation 2 195-201
Investigation 3
202-213
Investigation 4 214-227
Investigation 5 228-252
Assessment will be held on Wednesday, April 2nd
Dear Parents,
Your child will be taking their final science test tomorrow in class. We reviewed extensively
in class today so your child should be well prepared. You might want to quiz them a bit with
the following information. Answers/hints in red!
