Procedures:
Warm Up: Students will identify each kind of musical notes.
Class Activity: Students will work in partners to translate musical notes into equations.
Students will be assigned partners at teacher’s discretion. Students will be given a
numerical value for each musical note name. They will need to recall the names of
each note and its appearance. They will then have to use order of operations in order
to simplify the expression. Students will be given ten expressions to simplify. They will
then be asked to hand in their paper, and will be given a different group’s paper to grade.
They will exchange their paper with one single group, so Group A will grade Group B’s
paper, and Group B will grade Group A’s paper. They will have to then verify that each note
was translated correctly and that order of operations was used correctly. Once they have
completed grading, they will meet with the group that verified their answers and become
teachers themselves. One group will be the teacher at a time and discuss with the
partnering group where they may have made a mistake. Once both groups are finished
discussing their work, students will get back to normal seating and turn in their papers.
Closure: Students will free write how math and music are related. They will be
guided through the following questions:
1. How is math like music?
2. How is music like math?
3. How could we use math to help us with music?
4. How could we use music to help us with math?
Assessment: Students graded worksheets.
