The Liaison Office
The Liaison Office provides course advice and planning, information, publications, advice on admission,
University Entrance, new courses, updates, runs campus events and is also a good first point of contact if you
have an enquiry you need answered. The Liaison Office primarily makes contact through your school’s
nominated University Liaison staff member or Careers Adviser. The University has Liaison Offices in
Christchurch and Nelson.

STAR Courses
The University of Canterbury offers a range of courses for secondary school students. School students attend
lectures, labs and tutorials and undertake course assessment. Courses in Humanities and Social Sciences,
Computer Science and Physics (all under specified conditions), Economics, Education and Forestry are
available by distance. Courses that are completed successfully are credited towards the student's degree
when they subsequently enrol at Canterbury. Credit transfer can be applied for should a student who has
completed a STAR course enrol at another university.

Outreach Programmes
College Offices are able to provide an annual programme of events involving schools. This programme
should be included in the UC Schools’ portal web page. Events include such activities as subject open days
and competitions. Outreach Programmes also provide presentations and workshops to school students and
teachers, as well as exam and scholarship preparation programmes.

Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring
The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) is a research unit with international links, providing high
quality statistical measurement and analysis for schools.
The Centre is committed to applying best standards for its high quality tests, questionnaires, analysis and
indicator systems. One key activity is the measurement of pupil progress (value added) with clear graphical
feedback and comparisons against thousands of other students throughout New Zealand. A second key
activity is development, marking and analysis of the assessments in English, Maths and Reasoning Skills,
designed for entrance into Year 7 or Year 9.
