The Bader International Study Centre (BISC), the UK campus of Queen’s University (Canada), is seeking a part-time instructor in the field of British Medieval History for the Summer School in British Archaeology Summer 2016. Combining history and archaeology, this course explores the key developments of Medieval England from the formation of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms to the late 15th Century Wars of the Roses. A significant proportion will be devoted to the study of material culture and the practice of archaeology. Located in the fifteenth century Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, the BISC prides itself on offering rigorous, innovative education to students from Canada and around the world. Academic programs include undergraduate Humanities, Sciences, Commerce and Social Sciences, and specialised short programs in areas including Law, International Law and Politics, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Archaeology. Reporting to the Academic Director, the instructor will be responsible for delivering one upper-year History course: HIST 332 - Medieval Britain. The course spans the summer term (6 instructional weeks from early May to mid-June). The instructor will develop the course syllabus in line with the requirements outlined by Queen’s University and the Bader International Study Centre. The instructor will deliver course content in the form of lectures, seminars and practical archaeology; develop and lead field studies, hold regular office hours (1.5 hours/week), invigilate exams, grade assessments, and submit final grades. Lectures will take place at Herstmonceux Castle. Experiential learning, including field studies, is a requirement of every course offered at the BISC, and take place both on- and off-site. Field studies and other experiential learning will be planned in coordination with the Experiential Learning Office. Applicants must hold a PhD or be a PhD candidate in Medieval History and have demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate students. Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK, and be aware that because the BISC is in a rural location there is no public transport within a reasonable walking distance. Polegate and Battle are the nearest railway stations; both served by taxis. Candidates must successfully complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. Flexibility in work hours is expected. Lectures may take place in the evening and field studies will likely take place in the evenings and at weekends. This is a fixed-term contract position with a competitive salary that expires upon the submission of final student grades in June 2016.
