October 7, 2015 – SEC Seminar and Dinner Meeting Corrosion Mitigation In Older Building Envelopes Presenter: Gina Crevello Principal – e2chem Consultants, LLC The seminar will cover diagnosing causes of building envelope corrosion of older steel-framed buildings. The northeast is the home to some of the most prestigious pre-and post-war steel frame buildings in the US, from elegant apartment complexes to iconic commercial buildings. As these buildings are now well beyond their intended service life, ongoing maintenance and repair of the building envelope can be costly and seemingly ongoing. Corrosion of the embedded steel frame and associated anchorage is one of the major causes of the deterioration and subsequent damage to the building cladding. Often times, there are visual indicators of corrosion activity, seen in cracking, spalling and potential loss of entire building stones. With advanced corrosion diagnostics and durability modeling, determining the condition state of the embedded steel and projected anticipated damages can be performed. The concept of the corrosion modeling and durability of structure stems from the European transportation industry and associated FIB codes. By applying this concept to aging buildings, the assessment procedure allows engineers owners and managers to: 1) 2) 3) 4) Understand where corrosion problems are on the building Determine when future cracking or decay will occur Allow for prioritization of repair, And, assess if cathodic protection is feasible. About the Speaker: Gina Crevello is an architectural materials conservator and corrosion specialist. She is principal of Echem Consultants LLC and holds an MSc in Historic Preservation and an Advanced Certificate in the Conservation of Historic Buildings and Sites. Ms. Crevello is a professional associate of the American Institute of Conservation. After working as an architectural conservator for 7 years, Ms. Crevello moved to the UK and trained in electrochemistry and corrosion diagnostics. Since 2005, she has developed a unique expertise which combines material science, assessment procedures for building conditions that impact corrosion, and applying the use of electrochemistry to the built heritage and landmark structures for corrosion mitigation. Her area of expertise includes reinforced concrete buildings and structures, steel frame masonry clad buildings, and atmospherically exposed steel structures. She is a board member of the APTi , former chair of the APTi Training and Education Committee, member of the APTi Technical Committee on Modern Heritage, committee member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers STG 01 Concrete Technical Group, member for both the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Corrosion committee and the International Concrete Repair Institute’s Corrosion Committee. She has published and presented numerous times on proactive and preventative conservation and corrosion mitigation strategies for historic buildings.
