NATIONAL MUSEUMS NORTHERN IRELAND Job Description Job Title Costume Assistant Grade: Administrative Assistant Hourly Rate: £9.13 Reporting To: Costume Co-ordinator Location: Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Cultra Duration: Casual Overall Purpose of the Post Reporting to the Costume Co-ordinator, the Costume Assistant will be responsible for supplying a quality laundry and minor repair service for costumes worn as part of the Living Museum Project at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. Duties and Responsibilities: The main activities which the post holder will be expected to perform are as follows: 1. To collect and clean costume garments worn by the Visitor Services Team in the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum on a daily basis. 2. To wash (including hand washing) and dry all washable items of costume. 3. To steam clean woollen garments. 4. To press laundered garments and other garments as requested by the Costume Co-ordinator. 5. To identify garments for specialist dry-cleaning in liaison with the Costume Co-ordinator. 6. To be responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the Laundry Room and for the general care of laundry equipment including washing machine, tumble dryer, steamer, irons and other pressing equipment. 7. To assist the Costume Co-ordinator with the maintenance and minor repairs to costume as required using hand sewing and machine sewing to repair seams, hems, replace buttons and patching of damaged garments. 8. To assist the Costume Co-ordinator with maintenance of the costume database. 9. To assist the Costume Co-ordinator in maintaining a daily log of costume issue, laundry and maintenance. 10. General terms and conditions of employment Costume Assistant (Casual) – Ulster Folk and Transport Museum This is an indication of the conditions of employment and is not intended to be exhaustive. There are no guaranteed minimum hours for this post and work will be offered on an ad-hoc basis. Whilst it is accepted that you may not always be available to work, the successful candidate will be expected to accept work on a regular basis. Salary - The post is graded on the Administrative Assistant salary scale currently £15,619 - £17,533 (pro rata) per annum. The remuneration for this post is £9.13 per hour. disturbance allowance.
