The Lawrence and Marie Shore Graduate Scholarship in the Life Sciences 2015-2016 Statement of Purpose The Lawrence and Marie Shore Graduate Scholarship in the Life Sciences enhances the educational mission of the University at Albany through the provision of an annual graduate scholarship to a student studying in the departments of Biological Sciences (including Forensics), Chemistry, Psychology (Neuroscience) or Physics (Biophysics). The scholarship(s) shall be applied to a graduate student in financial need and who has/have demonstrated academic achievement. Award Amount The 2015-2016 scholarship is $1,500 and will be divided in half and applied evenly to the recipient’s student account at the beginning of the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligibility All students matriculated in a graduate degree program in biology, chemistry, psychology (neuroscience), forensics, or physics (biophysics) are eligible to apply. Application Requirements Students must submit an application form available online at the CAS Dean’s Office website and in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology department websites and offices. To determine academic eligibility, applicants must submit an updated CV/resume, an unofficial or official transcript, and a statement of academic achievement (no more than 500 words). To determine financial need, students should follow the instructions that apply to them: International students whose visa requirements preclude them submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), must submit a statement of financial need. Applicants also have the option to submit any documents to support their statement, but only the statement is required. The statement should be limited to 500 words. All other applicants who are eligible to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must file one for the upcoming year by the deadline of the scholarship application. The FAFSA is at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSA-eligible applicants must submit either a print-out of a confirmation of their successfully submitted FAFSA or a statement noting the date of successful submission. The Office of Financial Aid will provide the selection committee with an assessment of financial need. No private information on income, assets, or other personal financial data collected by the FAFSA will be disclosed to the selection committee as part of this process. o FAFSA-eligible applicants have the option to also submit a supplemental statement of financial need with optional supporting documents in addition to the required note of the completed FAFSA. Again, the statement should be limited to 500 words. All applicants have the option to also submit any other supporting documents, such as letters of recommendation from members of the faculty. Payment In accordance with Title IV regulations, scholarship funds are applied directly to the recipient’s student account. Scholarship funds are not eligible to be disbursed or refunded in the form of a direct payment to recipients. Recipients who will to graduate in December 2015 will have the full amount of the scholarship applied in the Fall 2015 term.
