The Lawrence and Marie Shore Graduate Scholarship in the Life Sciences 2016-2017 Statement of Purpose The Lawrence and Marie Shore Graduate Scholarship in the Life Sciences enhances the educational mission of the University at Albany through the provision of an annual graduate scholarship to students studying in the departments of Biological Sciences (including Forensics), Chemistry, Psychology (Neuroscience) or Physics (Biophysics). The scholarships shall be applied to graduate students in financial need and who have demonstrated academic achievement. Award Amount The current level of funding allows for two scholarships of $2,500 to be awarded for 2016-2017. Half of the scholarship, or $1,250, will be applied at the beginning of the Fall 2016 semester and the other half will be applied at the beginning of the Spring 2017 semester. Recipients who will graduate in December 2016 will have the full amount of the scholarship applied in the Fall 2016 term. Eligibility All students matriculated in a graduate degree program in biology, chemistry, psychology (neuroscience), forensics, or physics (biophysics) are eligible to apply. Application Requirements Students must submit an application form available online at the CAS Dean’s Office website and in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology department websites and offices. To determine academic eligibility, applicants must submit an updated CV/resume, an unofficial or official transcript, and a statement of academic achievement (no more than 500 words). To determine financial need, students should follow the instructions that apply to them: International students whose visa requirements prevent them submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), must submit a statement of financial need. Applicants also have the option to submit any documents to support their statement, but only the statement is required. The statement should be limited to 500 words. All other applicants who are eligible to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must file one for the upcoming year (2016-17) by the deadline of the scholarship application. The FAFSA is at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSAeligible applicants must indicate somewhere in their application materials the date of successful submission of the 2016-17 FAFSA. The Office of Financial Aid will provide the selection committee with an assessment of financial need. No personal financial data collected by the FAFSA will be disclosed to the selection committee as part of this process. o FAFSA-eligible applicants may also submit a supplemental statement of financial need with optional supporting documents. They must also still complete and submit the FAFSA as directed above. Again, the statement should be limited to 500 words. All applicants have the option to submit any additional supporting materials, such as letters of recommendation from members of the faculty. In the past, reviewers have found faculty letters of recommendation helpful in evaluating applications, but they are not required. Payment In accordance with Title IV regulations and University policy, scholarship funds are applied directly to recipients’ student accounts. Scholarship funds are not eligible to be disbursed in the form of a direct payment to recipients. Deadline for Applications Completed application packets must be received in the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, AS 217, by April 6, 2016. Attention: Jay Oddi, Assistant to the Dean.
