L. E. Gable Middle School Spartanburg School District Six 2012 – 2013 School Year 8th Grade South Carolina History August 20, 2012 Parents, I am very excited to be at Gable Middle School again, and I’m also excited to have your child in my class this year. There is a lot of work ahead for us, but my main goal is to ensure your child’s success in my class and on the PASS—this cannot be done without your support and help. On the first day of school, my expectations for your child will be made clear. We will go over classroom rules and procedures, and we will practice them the first week or so. Your child will be working with maps, vocabulary, related newspaper and magazine articles, his/her textbook, content-related worksheets, primary and secondary sources, the Internet, and PASS practice materials. They will also be required to participate in class (see your child’s syllabus), complete assignments on time, and to work in groups periodically. The whole idea is to familiarize your child with the world around them and to improve your child’s intellectual and social levels. I look forward to getting to know you and your child and watching him/her grow this school year. Feel free to contact me at school anytime with any concerns. Sincerely, Josh Comer 8th Grade South Carolina History 7th/8th Assistant Football L.E. BE PREPARED 2. SHOW RESPECT 3. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY 4. OBEY ALL SCHOOL RULES *I expect all students to come into my class ready to learn. That means having all materials, being on time, and having a good attitude. Students should respect themselves, others, the teacher, and the school building. I also expect students to study for tests, participate in class, and do their best in my class in preparation for PASS. Attitude and success are up to YOU! Classroom Procedures There will be order and structure to everything that we do in my class. Procedures will be made clear the first day and students will be given time to adjust and practice the procedures. After that, they are expected to adhere to them at all times. (See procedures sheet) Grading I will use a point system in my class this year. That means that each type of assessment will count a certain number of times as explained in the area below. District Grading Scale: ↓ A 93-100 Tests/Projects – 3 times B 85-92 Classwork/Quizzes – 2 times C 77-84 Participation – 1 time D 70-76 Homework – 1 time F 69 and below Homework Policy The amount of homework given will vary from week to week. Homework is an important part of the learning experience and is not given as punishment. I only assign homework as supplemental learning where extra practice is needed OR if we do not cover all the material I had planned. Make-up Work Policy It is the student’s responsibility to complete and turn in missed work. Late work will be graded as follows: one day late = no higher than an 84; two days late = no higher than a 69. Also, it is the student’s responsibility to catch up on notes when they are absent. Absenses/Tardies When a student misses my class, we still move on to new material. Come to school unless you are sick!!! If you are tardy to my homeroom class (late coming to school), you MUST go to the office to sign in. If you are late to my class, you MUST have a note signed by a teacher as an excuse.
