Description:
Introducing complete beginners to basic skills in Portuguese, this
module teaches key grammatical structures, vocabulary and the
use of spoken Portuguese. It leads to CEFR A2 (Elementary/
GCSE level. * Falar…Ler… Escrever… Portuges: um curso para
estrangeiros is used as a textbook, supported by a wide range of
other materials. You will acquire a basic knowledge of
grammatical structures, including different grammar tenses and
vocabulary, and will have enough vocabulary to ‘survive’ and deal
with predictable and/or specific information in simple everyday
situations. The module will introduce you to cultural elements of
the Afro-Luso-Brazilian world appropriate to the level. An
understanding of how to study Portuguese independently and how
to engage with Portuguese speakers will be facilitated and
encouraged by the use of internet-based tools such as Moodle,
MSN, Facebook and Skype.

This module will develop your ability to interact in Brazilian
Portuguese in a wider range of everyday situations, while gaining
an increased awareness of everyday life and the diversity of
cultures in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries. You
will be introduced to media in Portuguese, and will be expected to
understand the gist of news and other radio and TV programmes.
You will learn the uses of the subjunctive, relative pronouns and
indirect speech, idioms and expressions, bringing your proficiency
up to CEFR B1/AS level* standard. You will discuss the
differences between Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese spoken
in other countries, and will be introduced to Brazilian music,
history, cinema and folklore.

This module is aimed at developing your language skills in
Portuguese (listening, speaking, reading and writing) to an
advanced intermediate level of ability and helping you gain further
insight into aspects of the culture and society of the Portuguesespeaking countries. You will consolidate your knowledge of tenses
in the indicative and the subjunctive, and learn to use more
complex sentences and structures, as well as idioms and
expressions. The module aims to bring your proficiency in
Portuguese up to CEFR B2/A-level+* standard. You will be
working with longer texts from a range of media, including
lectures, TV news and current affairs programmes, and films.

Description:
This module, leading to CEFR C1/post A level*, is aimed at
developing your language skills in Portuguese (listening, speaking,
reading and writing) to an advanced level of ability and helping
you gain further insight into aspects of the culture and society of
the Portuguese-speaking countries. You will learn to use more
complex sentences and structures, such as the passive voice and
compound sentences, and will further expand your vocabulary.
You will be expected to understand a variety of texts from a range
of media, including short literary texts, TV programmes and films.

This 24-week module, leading to CEFR C2/degree level*, aims to
consolidate your fluency and accuracy of language use, both in
speaking and writing. It introduces basic translation skills for which
journalistic and academic texts are employed. You will study
literature texts, from Romanticism up to present day, from the
different Portuguese-speaking countries. It takes you up to a
degree level of ability. You will consolidate your academic writing
in the language by producing a range of essays and/or a short
research project based on films and/or literary texts. You will
improve your oral-aural skills through the use of authentic texts,
films, TV and radio programmes and discussions and debates in
class.
