You will acquire a basic knowledge of grammatical structures, including different grammar tenses and vocabulary, and will have enough vocabulary to ‘survive’ and deal with predictable and/or specific information in simple everyday situations. The module will introduce you to cultural elements of the Afro-Luso-Brazilian world appropriate to the level. An understanding of how to study Portuguese independently and how to engage with Portuguese speakers will be facilitated and encouraged by the use of internet-based tools such as Moodle, MSN, Facebook and Skype. You will be introduced to media in Portuguese, and will be expected to understand the gist of news and other radio and TV programmes. You will learn the uses of the subjunctive, relative pronouns and indirect speech, idioms and expressions, bringing your proficiency up to CEFR B1/AS level* standard. You will consolidate your knowledge of tenses in the indicative and the subjunctive, and learn to use more complex sentences and structures, as well as idioms and expressions. The module aims to bring your proficiency in Portuguese up to CEFR B2/A-level+* standard. It introduces basic translation skills for which journalistic and academic texts are employed. You will study literature texts, from Romanticism up to present day, from the different Portuguese-speaking countries. It takes you up to a degree level of ability. You will consolidate your academic writing in the language by producing a range of essays and/or a short research project based on films and/or literary texts. You will improve your oral-aural skills through the use of authentic texts, films, TV and radio programmes and discussions and debates in class. * Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
