Reading and writing is one of the skills that my mother and father instilled in me to succeed in this world. I remember great quotes that were written on that wall such as “The more you read, the more you will know”. The morn you learn, the more places you’ll go, by Dr. Suess. I can remember a book called “Bedtime Stories, although I can’t recall the name of the author. I also can remember my mother and father would read to me but as I got older they would ask me to read to them. I wanted to show how smart I was memorizing the stories they read to me. Until one day my father bought another book named the little engine that could. I can remember the feeling I had when he found out I couldn’t read he marched me down to Big Lots and we got a lot of reading and writing materials because he wanted me to be prepared for school. Being that my mother and father taught me how to read it was a lot of pressure because of the fact that I couldn’t have the play privileges as I did before. I believe that my father and mother encouraged me to be a great reader. A great reader to them is when I challenge my reading level, think about what I am reading, write question, and have fun learning. Instead of learning word my mother and father found it was better for me to learn alphabets. The first thing I would have to do when I woke up is say my prayers and my alphabets. As I began to excel in my reading I also became intrigued to write my own name. I took reading and writing as a positive outlook on my life because it excelled my learning experience. I grew fond to reading chapter book when I was in middle school. As I got older my reading and writing matured as well. Reading is power to me, as it uplifts my sprits is brings color to dim days and warmth to the hearts. Reading the Bible gives me comfort and encouragement and that’s a feeling that no book can give me. Reading the selection from WEB Dubois and how difficult it was for him gave me encouragement to do better.
