History of NJCU’S RN to BSN
Part of New Jersey City University’s (NJCU) College of Professional Studies the NJCU Nursing
Department was established in 1976, and was one of the first programs in New Jersey to solely
service the professional registered nurse returning for a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing
(BSN). Graduates of the highly-regarded program, which is accredited by the Accreditation
Commission for the Education in Nursing (ACEN) formerly known as NLNAC and approved by the
New Jersey State Board of Nursing, have pursued graduate studies, developed expertise in
specialty areas, and assumed nursing leadership positions across the country.
What Is A BSN?
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepares students for a career as a Registered Nurse
working in a wide range of healthcare organizations. Graduates of the program are prepared to
assume the responsibilities of a nursing generalist as well as to assume leadership positions in
nursing.
Admission to the RN to BSN program is restricted to nurses who are graduates of diploma or
associate degree programs or foreign educated nurses who are eligible for RN licensure in the US.
RN to BSN Program Locations

Description of NJCU’S RN to BSN
The RN to BSN program requires a total of 128 credits for graduation. With transfer credits,
portfolio, and examination (CLEP) credits, it is possible to complete the program in as few as 12 18 months or as individually desired. The program offers both part-time and full-time options.
Students may begin the program at the start of the fall, spring, or summer terms, and many
courses are offered every semester, some classes may be a blended format. Of note, the nursing
department offers international trips focused on Culture, Mission focused, the History of Nursing
and Global Health Issues.
The NJCU RN to BSN curriculum can be found online on the RN to BSN webpage
http://www.njcu.edu/nursing/rn-bsn/general-info/ and on page 8 of this document.
Applicants must meet admission requirements to be eligible for consideration. Nurses applying for
admission must submit official transcript(s) from any nursing schools and/or colleges attended to
the NJCU Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Transfer credits are evaluated by the NJCU
4
Academic Advising Center. Internationally educated students need to have transcripts evaluated
by an independent accreditation agency, such as World Education Services or Education
Credential Service.
Students will also be required to provide proof of a current Registered Nurse License in the state
of New Jersey prior to taking their first clinical course (Nursing Process and Health Promotion
NURS 452).
RN to BSN Dual Admissions Program & Articulation Agreements
The College of Professional Studies has dual-admission agreements participating with the colleges
noted below for nursing students:
1. Brookdale Community College
2. Essex County College
3. Passaic County Community College
4. Hudson County Community College in association with CarePoint Health School of Nursing
The dual-admission process permits students to transfer directly from the community college
after successful completion of their Applied Associates Degree (AAS) to NJCU’s RN to BSN program.
This unique program allows nursing students to earn credits toward their (AAS) degree and their
NJCU Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at the same time. Students who subsequently
complete their AAS degree program and fulfill all criteria of the dual admissions program will
enter NJCU as a fully matriculated student with junior-year standing.
Students must be admitted to the Brookdale CC, Essex CC, Passaic CCC, Hudson CC/CarePoint
Health School of Nursing program to be eligible to apply as a dual admit student. The dual
admission application form can be found at your respective college’s transfer office. This Dual
Admit form must be completed any semester before your final semester at the above colleges.
The number of credits transferred into the NJCU RN to BSN program varies based upon the
number of credits earned in the ASS degree and on the respective articulation agreement.

Brookdale Community College Credits earned in the AAS and transferred into the BSN
ranges from 72-82 credits, this will vary dependent upon the number credits of the
prerequisite courses taken at Brookdale CC.

Essex County College Credits earned in the AAS and transferred into the BSN ranges from
66 - 75 dependent upon the number credits of prerequisite courses taken at Essex CC

Passaic County Community College Credits earned in the AAS and transferred into the
BSN are 68 credits.

Hudson County Community College with CarePoint Health School of Nursing (CPHSON):
Credits earned at the AAS and transferred into the BSN are: HCCC (37 credits) and CPHSON
(34 credits) are transferred into the BSN Degree.
5
(Please note for any prospective, current or past* students. CPHSON graduates must have received their degree
no earlier than 2011 to be eligible for the program.)
If you are a past graduate of any of the above four nursing programs, and would like to apply to
NJCU after you have graduated, you may be eligible to transfer all earned AAS credits into your
BSN. Please make an appointment for advisement to discuss your respective credits with
LConyers1@njcu.edu for Jersey City Campus students and JMattiello@njcu.edu for the Wall
Campus students.

Job Market
A BSN degree is the desired degree for employers and your chances of being hired are improved
because of your education. Jobs for new BSN graduates are available in New Jersey and New York,
depending upon geographic location. Elsewhere in the nation there are critical shortages of BSN
prepared nurses and jobs are more plentiful. As employment opportunities are known, they are
shared with graduates.
