NURS 7792/W01 – Advanced Nursing Leadership Role & the Healthcare

Pre-requisite: Admission to the MSN program or permission from program director

Credit Hours: 4 Semester Hours (4-0-4)

Times/Location Course is conducted online via Desire 2 Learn (D2L)

Course Description: This course is designed to provide an introduction and transition to the leadership role of the advanced practice in nursing administration and an overview of factors shaping current of healthcare policy. The role of the nursing leader as well as the standards and regulations governing advanced practice will be explored. Topics include role theory, change theory, leadership theory, and complexity theory as they apply to advanced practice nursing. Emphasis is on transition to a leadership role and integration of the various advanced practice roles by the nursing administrator with over-sight of care delivery in complex healthcare systems.

Course Objectives/Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.

Analyze the role of the advanced practice nurse in the context of an ever-changing health care delivery system as well as its political economy and major ideological influences.

2.

Describe the role of the nursing administrator in oversight of a care delivery system and the relationship among policy, political activity and finance.

3.

Explore historical events that have influenced the view of the advanced practice nurse role.

4.

Identify the competencies of a nursing administrator and apply to a personal development plan for transition to the role of the advanced practice nurse with emphasis on the ethical and social issues of a diverse society.

5.

Demonstrate knowledge of classic/current literature relating to the development and implementation of the role of the advanced practice nurse, specifically the nurse administrator/health policy nursing leader.

6.

Describe the roles of Federal, State, and Local governments in the development of health care policy.

7.

Identify issues involved in achieving access to health care for individuals and populations, including vulnerable populations.

8.

Analyze the impact of health care policy on client care and advanced practice nursing.

Investigate the legal, socioeconomic, and political issues that impact the complex adaptive systems associated with healthcare.

Methods of Instruction: Included, but are not limited to, online discussion activities, PowerPoint and other web-based presentations, and assessment activities. All methods will be conducted in online environment.

Methods of Evaluation/Grading Criteria: The requirements of this course will be met through online participation and assignments, the writing of a scholarly paper on a topic related to healthcare delivery, and the presentation of a specific role issue. All paper submitted to D2L will be submitted to TurnitIn for archiving in the database and evaluation for plagiarism.

(American Nurses Association, 2001) will result in failure of the course.

All written work by student must be turned in on time to get full credit. Failure to turn in required assignments on the due dates will result in a loss of “ 10 points per day” passed the assigned due date.

1. The final presentation should be approximately 15 minutes in length and must conform to current APA guidelines. At least 5 current (no more than 3 years old) peer-reviewed journal references are required.

Please refer to the APA & Student Handbook discussion on plagiarism. The presentation will be graded on organization, accuracy of content, comprehensiveness, use of correct APA format, grammar, style, and clarity as well as relevance to Leadership and Advanced Practice Nursing. Topics for the individual student exploration of a Healthcare Delivery issue impacting nursing care and/or nursing profession will be selected on or before September 14, 2013. During November 11– November 23, 2013, students will present the PowerPoint Presentation (by 5 PM on November 11 or 17, 2013) and lead a discussion with the class as other students critique the presentation to demonstrate successful completion of course outcomes. Further guidelines for presentation are provided in the grading rubric.

2. The four online assignments related to the course outcomes will involve students leading the class in the discussion on the readings for a specified timeframe. The lead students will present a summary of the readings and lead a discussion with classmates on relevant points from the readings. Further guidelines will be included in each course module. General guidelines will be to summarize/critique the readings in approximately 3 paragraphs with each student responding to this summary. Please include references/citations in postings and use correct grammar and spelling.

3 The final paper should be 10-15 pages in length and must conform to current APA guidelines. At least

August 16 – September 5, 2013: Module I: Leadership Roles of Advanced Practice Nurses

Course Overview & Introductions, What are the roles of APNs? Identify the structure and processes of the healthcare system. What is the role of the Nurse Administrator as an influencer of policy and political activity?

September 6 – October 6, 2013: Module II – Healthcare Systems

Overview of healthcare delivery systems in relation to policy development processes at the state and National level. Avenues of influence for nursing. Exploration and application of complexity theory. Identification of historical events that influenced the advanced practice nurse. Identify competencies of the nursing administrator with personal assessment.

October 7–November. 17, 2013: Module III- Change and Innovation in the leadership role.

Identification of how current trends in healthcare have driven organization change.

Identification of change processes. Analyze strategy development processes. Planning change, working within groups, and the role of the nursing leader in shared governance.

November 18 –December 4, 2013: Module IV - Evaluating the Health Care System

Identification of issues in healthcare delivery, standards, and outcomes. The expanding role of nursing leadership in assessment and planning related to current healthcare issues. Identification of issues of access for vulnerable populations. Identification of legal, socioeconomic, and political issues/pressures in navigating within in a complex adaptive system.
