Course Focus: This course will focus on year around basic sheep/goat management for students actively engaged in the operation and management
of a sheep or goat enterprise or starting up an enterprise.
Course Description: This course introduces basic sheep/goat management principles. Students will study the year around management and
production cycle of a sheep/goat enterprise and understand how each production stage influences enterprise profitability. This course also studies
the philosophy of sheep/goat management and its relationship to business goals.
Course Goals: The following list of course goals will be addressed in the course.
1. Explain U. S. sheep/goat industry.
2. Recognize how each production stage influences others.
3. Develop awareness of the phases of seasonal production.
4. Describe production strategies for profit.
5. Describe philosophy of successful sheep/goat managers.
Course Objectives:
1. Students will perform tagging, shots, and banding of lambs.
2. Students will design a lambing facility to build on their operation.
3. Students will implement a marketing plan for their lambs and wool.
4. Students will demonstrate how to shear sheep.
5. Students will describe the different types of sheep flocks.
6. Students will classify the different types of grasses and plants that sheep eat.
7. Students will develop a plan to integrate sheep into their beef operations.

Will be administered on E-Learning. You will you have 24 hours to complete the quiz once posted. Exams will be in class.
Make up quizzes are not given, unless scheduled prior to absence.
Attendance is expected and important. No make-up exams or quizzes will be given (0 will be recorded) except for instructor approved situations or illness (doctors
note). It is the responsibility of the student to get approval for the absence from the instructor before the date of the class to be missed. In the case of illness, it is
necessary to email me.
Classroom Etiquette: Computers will be used in class when permitted; otherwise the computers will remain in the book bag. However, please be
aware that if you, the student, are caught using your computer for purposes other than note taking or following the Power Point Presentation (i.e.
Facebook, web surfing, games, email etc) during class, you will be marked absent and asked to leave the classroom. Such activities are often
distracting to those around the student as well as the instructor.
Cellphone usage (i.e. taking calls, checking voicemail, and texting) during class time is not permitted and will also result in you, the student, being
marked absent and asked to leave the classroom. If you know that you must take a call, let your instructor know prior to class, turn the phone to
silent/vibrate, and then sit next to the door so that you can leave the room and take your call without disrupting the class. Your instructor won’t be
taking calls during class and neither should you. Cell phones will be turned to silent or vibrate at the beginning of class and will be set on your desk
while class is going on.
There will be no hats permitted in class, when you are in the hallway or shop they are allowed. They will not be allowed in my classroom.
Eating/Drinking in Class: Eating and/or drinking during class will be tolerated by this instructor provided you, the student, clean up after yourself.
However, no food trays will be allowed in the classroom. If eating and/or drinking during class time become disruptive, the privilege will be denied. Be
advised that during some class activities or labs, the instructor may not allow eating and/or drinking due to the potential for food safety risks.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism and academic dishonesty in class, laboratory, or on tests, quizzes, or assignments is regarded as a serious offense and could
result in the student’s expelling and failing of the course. Please refer to page 31 in the Student Handbook for Lake Area Tech’s Academic
Honesty Policy. Handbook can be found online.
