Dakota City Flood Update June 8, 2011 Sandbagging: With the help of over 1000 volunteers over the past week, sandbagging of the river front has been completed to a level of at least two foot over the predicted flood level. The sandbags will be covered with plastic on Wednesday. The levee has been completed at the Southeast end of the city to prevent flood waters from coming in from the south. Waste Water Treatment: Because the river level could flood the Dakota City waste water treatment discharge line, the line will be plugged and processed waste water will be pumped into the river through a completed piping system visible along Willow Street. Monitoring of Ground Water and Basement Flooding: Beginning Saturday, Dakota City will have the ground water elevation at four locations on our website (dakotacity.net). Because of rising ground water we encourage you to move valuables out of your basement and to plug all drains. More information is available about this is available at our website. Rain Implications: Because of the flood stage, the discharge rate of our storm sewer is limited, If we experience any substantial rain, it may result in some ponding or limited area flooding until the water soaks into the ground or flows through the storm sewer. We have plugs on hand to plug the storm sewer and to pump water to the river. We are awaiting large pumps from Nebraska Emergency Management to pump the storm water into the river. We are not certain of the day those will be received but, upon arrival, will be immediately plugged and pumping will begin from the last manhole closest to the river. With the assistance of Tyson Foods, Dakota City will plug on Olive Street and two pumps capable of a total of 4,400 cubic feet per minute will begin Saturday morning. Closing the north part of that intersection where pumps will be located is planned. Two eight inch pipes will discharge storm water to the river. As additional plugging and pumping plans are implemented, the public will be updated. Security and Monitoring: Assistance has been requested from the National Guard to provide 24/7 surveillance of the newly built levee; final approval for Guard troops has not been received. Everyone stay away from the river water. It is septic and dangerous. Garbage Disposal: Due to the potential flooding situation in Dakota City, Gill Hauling, Inc, will pick up small reasonable amounts of garbage items surrounding the garbage carts at the curb on normal pickup day. Gill Hauling will not, at this time, dispose of any tree limbs, furniture remodeling or demolition debris. Please be careful not to place items you intend to keep near the garbage carts. We will update you as additional information is available.
