Adapting to Survive in a Habitat
Due Date: Dec. ______, 2014
Explore animals from around the world. Choose one of the following habitats: desert,
ocean, forest, rain forest, prairie, mountains and Polar Regions. You will then create a
power point or a brochure highlighting the adaptations ONE animal would need in order to
survive in that habitat.
Option 1: Brochure
Directions:
1. Research your chosen habitat’s climate and the animals found there. Then select 1
animal from that habitat to research. Look for information about the three types of
adaptations: physical, behavioral and instinctual.
2. Using an“8 ½ x 11” sheet of white paper folder into thirds. (As shown inclass)
3. Use the following guidelines to create your brochure:
1. Cover: Show a scene from the habitat with your animal and another animal in it.
Include at least one other living and non-living members of the habitat. Include the
habitat’s name, your name, and your teacher’s name.
2. Inside left flap: Name and explain how your animal stays warm, stays cool, or
maintains a comfortable temperature while living in that habitat. Add illustrations.
3. Inside center flap: Name and explain how your animal uses its shelter to survive in its
habitat. Add illustrations.
4. Inside right flap: Name and explain how your animal has adapted in order to find and
eat food in their habitat. Add illustrations.
5. Back right flap: Name and explain how your animal uses its defense mechanism to
survive. Add illustrations.
6. Back center flap: Choose an animal not found in NC and put it in one of the three
regions. Explain how they would have to change physically, behaviorally and
instinctively to survive in that NC region. Draw what this animal would look like.
*Each illustration MUST include hand drawn pictures. The brochure itself may contain
only one copied picture.

Directions:
1. Research your chosen habitat’s weather and the animals found there. Then select 1
animal from that habitat to research. Look for information about the three types of
adaptations: physical, behavioral and instinctual.
2. Using the “Power Point” format.
3. Use the following guidelines to create your brochure:
1. Slide 1: Create a cover page with your name, teacher’s name and name of your animal.
2. Slide2: Show a scene from the habitat with your animal and another animal in it.
Include at least one other living and non-living members of the habitat.
3. Slide 3: Name and explain how your animal stays warm, stays cool, or maintains a
comfortable temperature while living in that habitat. Add a picture.
4. Slide 4: Name and explain how your animal uses its shelter to survive in its habitat.
Add pictures.
5. Slide 5: Name and explain how your animal has adapted in order to find and eat food
