Symposium on
THE AUTONOMY OF BYZANTINE PHILOSOPHY
Norwegian Institute of Athens & University of Athens
5-6 December 2008
The aim of the symposium on ‘The Autonomy of Byzantine Philosophy’ is to raise and
deal with the much discussed question of whether there is such a thing as philosophy in
Byzantium clearly demarcated from theology and resistant to the pressures of religious
orthodoxy. The participants will focus on specific topics related to this question in the
areas of ethics, politics, physics, cosmology, biology, psychology, metaphysics, and
rhetoric.
