Mrs. Barney’s Classroom Procedures
In our class we show respect for others, ourselves and other’s property
Classroom Instruction time: When I am reading to the class or instructing the class, there
will be no talking or moving about the classroom for any reason. Examples of this would be
getting drinks or sharpening pencils.
To keep a peaceful and orderly classroom, students must raise their hands and wait to be
called on. Calling out comments and answers shows disrespect for the teacher as well as
others. This behavior may result in the loss of a ticket.
Lining up and traveling through the hall: Students will line up quickly and quietly. (If Mrs.
Barney says, “ten hut” students will face forward standing straight and tall with no talking.)
Students will travel through the halls without talking in order not to disturb other
classrooms.
Prep time behavior: Students will be respectful of prep-time teachers. If a student chooses
to be disrespectful, they will lose the opportunity of attending the prep-time the following
week.
Bathroom Breaks: Students should use the bathroom during recess. If a student asks to use
the bathroom before morning recess, there is no penalty. If a student asks to visit the
bathroom within 45 minutes after each recess, they must pay a ticket to leave the
classroom.
Coming in from recess: Instruction begins 3 minutes after the bell rings. If there is a
student is consistently late coming in from recess, and they have been sufficiently warned,
they will need a note from the principal or secretary to return to the classroom. If this
persists, a student will receive an incident report.
Incident Reports: An incident report is a report that a student fills out describing an
undesirable behavior. The student tells what the infraction is and how they are going to fix
the problem. This must be discussed with and signed by a parent.
Morning Work (Self Starts): When a student arrives, they should enter the classroom, hang
up backpacks and jackets, move their picture to the appropriate lunch schedule (home or
school lunch) and look up on the board for self-start instructions. These instructions will
include three or more of the following: vocabulary, 1 spelling task, sentence correction,
journal or silent read. This is also a good time to take AR tests. Students will work quietly
while teacher and parents assist others with various needs. We will pause for the Pledge of
Allegiance and the announcements. Quiet focused work is mandatory. Loss of ticket may
result for disturbance or wandering the classroom for no reason.
Turning in Papers: The students will line up quietly in number order. They will say their
number as they place the item or items on the desk. Students are required to go through
the line, even if they are unprepared. This is a fast procedure.
Late work: Students are expected to turn work in on time. Late work will be turned into the
turn in box by Mrs. Barney’s desk. It will be marked late. At SEP’s, students will be
rewarded for having fewer than 5 late or missing assignments per term. The parents will be
given a list of any late or missing assignments the students may have had throughout the
term. Students who have all assignments turned in each week will be rewarded
by attending the 20 minute “Fun Friday” activity, held every Friday.
The Cave: The Cave is provided for students to enjoy silent reading. There is no talking in
the cave. Students who talk in the cave will be asked to leave. The cave is also a gathering
place for the class to meet for things like student spotlights and show and tell. The student
who is the “spotlight” student as well as the student whose turn it is alphabetically, have
priority seating in the cave for their assigned week. No more than 5 students in the cave at
one time during silent reading time.
Jobs: Jobs are rotated weekly. The students who complete their weekly job well, will
receive a ticket. Wipers and Sweepers receive 2 tickets for their work. The computer job as
well as the librarian, are changed at mid-term, and term.
Pencil Papers: “Pencil Papers” are sent home every Thursday. It is attached to a parent
note that either says the student has no missing work, or it lists any assignments that a
student is missing. The “Pencil Paper” is to be signed by the parent indicating that they
have seen whatever is attached to it, and returned on Friday.
End if Day: Students will write in their planners, and put daily homework, along with any
other work they need to finish in their “take home folders”
The students will clean up around their desk and floor and wait by their desk to be
excused.
Teacher attention getters: Heads Down… I say “Heads Down” and proceed to count to 10.
If the entire class is quiet with their heads down by the count of 10, and remains quiet, the
class gets a point. 10 points result in a ticket for entire class.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ….I say 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and clap twice, the students clap twice with me. No one is to
say another word and all eyes are on the teacher.
1, 2, 3 eyes on me… I chants 1, 2, 3 eyes on me… the students respond with 1, 2 eyes on
you. The students all have their eyes on me and no one is talking.
Discipline Plan: Our classroom discipline plan is based on a ticket program. The students
receive tickets for responsible, good behavior. Tickets are taken away for irresponsible
disruptive behavior. A ticket auction is held at the end of each term. Each new term starts
anew with a new color of tickets.
