Francesco Messina is attending PhD studies (ranked 1st at scholarship competition) in Materials Science and
Technology for Civil Engineering (start: 1st January 2013 - expected end: 1st January 2016). After classifying
1st at aptitude tests for university access (2007), he got BSc in Civil and Environmental Engineering (magna
cum laude) and MSc in Civil Engineering (magna cum laude) in 2010 and 2012, respectively, receiving several
scholarships on the basis of average classes score (2009, 2010, 2012). His research activities face several topics
in the field of Materials Science and Technology; mostly for Civil Engineering applications: concrete science
and technology; alkali activated materials durability; stabilization/solidification processes; composite materials
for structural applications; building materials for special applications (e.g. electromagnetic shielding); life cycle
sustainability analysis. In this framework he is RILEM Student Member (nr. 24371) for two Technical
Committees (DTA - Durability Testing of Alkali Activated Materials; CSM - Composites for Sustainable
Strengthening of Masonry).
