Summer 2015 Holiday Programme for Disabled Children and Young People For many years West Lothian Council has provided funding to Barnardo’s and Lothian Autistic Society to deliver specialist play schemes for disabled children and young people. These play schemes have provided a safe environment for children and young people to play and mix with friends whilst each ensuring child’s individual needs are met. The play schemes offer a range of activities including arts, crafts, sports, games and outings and are staffed by qualified workers and volunteers who are trained and experienced in supporting children with varying disabilities. Over the years there has been an increase in demand for places and we have been working together to address this and to ensure the play scheme meets the needs of individual children, particularly those with more complex needs and challenging behaviour. In order to support this we have made some small changes to the specialist play schemes and some additional opportunities to the plans for summer 2015 which are outline below: Target groups The specialist play schemes are targeted at those children who are unable to or have limited opportunity to access mainstream holiday activities due to the impact of their disability. Additional activities are being offered to widen the range of opportunities . Barnardo’s Holiday Activity Programme (HAP) 6th-31st July and 3rd-14th August 9.30am-2.30pm HAP is aimed at children and young people (2 yrs – 16 yrs) who require a high level of support to engage in the range of activities. This includes children who have: significant learning or physical disability, complex disability i.e. autism/significant learning disability, complex health need, significant challenging behaviour. HAP is delivered from Beatlie Campus and/or Melbourne House. Children and young people will likely be attending specialist educational placements. Referral to HAP is currently made following an assessment of need by a worker from the Child Disability Service. It is unlikely places will be available to children and young people not known to CDS this summer, however, if you would like your child to be considered for a placement in the future please complete the attached application form. Lothian Autistic Society playscheme 7th-31st July, 9.30am-2.30pm Lothian Autistic Society’s play scheme is aimed at children and young people (5 yrs – 16 yrs) who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and have difficulty in accessing mainstream activities. Wiston Lodge- Activity days and/or residential Dates to be confirmed The activity days and/or residential opportunity is aimed at young people with mild to moderate learning disability who are in high school who have had no or limited opportunity to experience outdoor and/or a residential activity. If interested in this opportunity you and your child will be invited to an information session to hear more about the range of activities and practical arrangements. How much will it cost to attend? West Lothian Council fund Barnardo’s and Lothian Autistic Society to provide the play scheme and will fund them to provide workers to support the additional activities. Each organisation will make a small charge towards the activities provided to subsidise their core funding.
