75 COLLINS LANE ELEMENTARY PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY DEFINITION OF PARENT The legal definition of a “parent” is a parent, stepparent, or foster parent of a student or a person who has legal custody of a student pursuant to a court order and with whom the student resides. For the purposes of this policy we will use the term “parent” to encompass all diverse family situations. COMMITMENTS We commit to: 1. Providing opportunities through parent conferences, meetings and/or newsletters to describe curriculum, core content, student performance standards and assessments used to measure student progress. 2. Sharing clear information regarding individual student progress and school performance through various and appropriate means such as individual student performance reports, school report cards, parent meetings, conferences and newsletters as appropriate. 3. Encouraging parent involvement by hosting activities such as family literacy and math nights that offer practical suggestions on how parents can support student learning at home. 4. Making representative parents and community members full partners in our decision-making. 5. Facilitating the involvement of our parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children. 6. Seeking and supporting adult volunteers to work with and inspire our students, as well as making every effort when legally appropriate to accommodate the involvement of adults other than parents who are already involved in a student’s life. 7. Hosting an annual meeting, at the beginning of each school year, to inform parents of the school’s participation in the Title I program, review program requirements, school-parent compacts and parents’ right to be involved. 8. Involving parents in the planning, review and improvement of the parent involvement programs. 9. Providing opportunities for parents to offer suggestions and participate (where appropriate) in decisions relating to the education of their children. 10. Providing parents the opportunity to make comments on the school’s Schoolwide Program Plan when the school submits the plan to the district. We will honor these commitments through the school-parent compact. During an annual meeting with parents, we will review the parent policy and compact with parents, ask for input and then revise, if necessary.
