Imperial College has been awarde d almost £11million over a 5 year period by the
Wellcome Trust and EPSRC for a Medical Engineering Solutions in the Management of Osteoarthritis Centre of Excellence. There are a number of departments, divisions and institutes across Imperial participating in this Centre which will bring together a critical mass of engineers, clinicians and basic scientists, collaborating to use technology to improve the diagnosis, understanding, surgical management and rehabilitative treatment of osteoarthritis.
The purpose of this position is to use a high-throughput mechano-bioreactor to establish the optimal mechanical loading parameters required to tissue engineer novel osteochondral constructs for the potential treatment of osteoarthritis. The objective is to determine which mechanical characteristics have the greatest impact on cell biological function and which characteristics provide optimal conditioning of tissue-engineered constructs prior to implantation
.
The candidate will investigate the effect of mechanostimulation, its influence on cell proliferation, differentiation and metabolism, and its role on the growth, adaptation, and maturation of tissue engineered osteochondral constructs. Cell mechanics and mechanotransduction pathways will also be investigated.
Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Bioengineering, Tissue
Engineering, M olecular Biology, Biochemistry or Cell Biology and be able to demonstrate experience in cell and/or tissue culture.
