Peninsula Library System Selects 3M RFID Solution
- Enables member libraries to more effectively circulate, manage and secure their collections ST PAUL, Minn. – January 5, 2011 – The Peninsula Library System (PLS), a
consortium of 35 public and community college libraries that serves the residents of San Mateo
County, California, has selected 3M to implement RFID solutions in their library system .
Working together through PLS, these libraries provide their patrons with a variety of
innovative and cost-effective services that enable them to better serve their diverse communities.
PLS libraries circulate approximately eight million items per year and manage a collection of
nearly two million items.
PLS identified RFID technology as a way to help their members more effectively
circulate, manage and secure their growing library collections. After extensively evaluating the
systems offered by a variety of vendors, PLS chose 3M to implement their RFID solution. PLS
chose 3M because their solution best enables their member libraries to:

Achieve high rates of patron self check-in and checkout

Increase the speed of circulation transactions

Reduce routine tasks performed by staff

Improve the overall efficiency of circulation
According to Monica Schultz, Director of Information Technology for PLS, “We were

ILS vendors, including open source, which is a definite plus.”
The project will begin later this month with the tagging of millions of items with RFID
tags and consulting services that will enable each PLS member library to receive an RFID
solution that has been optimized to meet their specific goals. Over the course of the next several
months, 3M will then install over one hundred staff workstations, nearly one hundred 3M
SelfCheck System R-Series units and dozens of 3M Detection Systems.
