Corrine Coulter P.1 3-9-15 Anne Frank Do you know who Anne Frank is? Well she became famous because of her diary. Could you imagine becoming famous because people were reading your diary? She was significant because of her diary, the publishing of her diary and for being in the Holocaust. She was forced into hiding for two years. She and her family lived in a secret annex room and that were the diary began. What makes Anne’s diary so special? Is it because she wrote about life, or because of the time period, or just because she’s a great writer? I believe that it is all of the above. Anne loved to write, she wrote in her diary every day. She would write about life in the annex, her future as a writer, her favorite books and authors and so much more that she described as stuff she can’t talk about with her “every day” friends. Once she was forced into hiding her lifestyle changed, she said that if it wasn’t for her diary she would have suffocated because of her love for life and writing. One day there was radio broadcast telling people to save their diary’s this assures her to rewrite her diary so she begins to rewrite her diary and calls it “The Secret Annex”. She never did get to finish it. Anne Frank was a Jewish girl from the time of the Holocaust. This must have been hard for her and yet she continued to write. Anne Frank was also significant because of the Holocaust. She was one of over a million Jewish children who died during the Holocaust. On July 10, 1942 the Frank family went into hiding. Only two years later Anne Frank was captured. On August 4, 1944, the Gestapo (German Secret State Police) discovered the hiding place after being tipped off by an anonymous Dutch caller. That same day, Gestapo official SS Sergeant Karl Silberbauer and two Dutch police collaborators arrested the Franks. Anne and her sister, Margot were transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp near Celle, in northern Germany in late October 1944. Because of their youth Anne and her sister Margot were chosen to do labor. Not much later they both died from Typhus. Anne Frank didn’t survive the Holocaust but her father did and he intended to make sure she was remembered. Anne’s diary was published in 1947. Her diary was the most popular diary from that time period. The diary has been translated into more than 70 languages. There have been films made and plays written about Anne Frank and more than 1 million people visit the Anne Frank House every year. The Diary of Anne Frank, the first stage dramatization, premièred on Broadway in New York on October 5, 1955. About forty years later, in 1997, it was revived in a production by Wendy Kesselman, in which Anne Frank was played by famous Hollywood actress Natalie Portman. In 1999, the production was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Anne Frank’s diary was one of few diaries that actually got published from the time of the Holocaust. Anne dreamed of becoming a famous writer when she got older, little did she know that she would be even more famous after she died. Anne Frank is a very significant person because of her diary, being a part of the Holocaust and the publishing of her diary. Anne kept a diary as her best friend and that’s how she made it through the tough times. I feel that Anne Frank was a symbol, a symbol of courage. Even though she didn’t live through the holocaust her legacy is lived through her diary. Works Cited Anne Frank: A diary as a best friend. 28 April 2010. Web. 27 Febuary 2015.
