Dear Raleigh-Egypt High School Community:
As you know, our school and district are dedicated to ensuring the success of our students. While we
have always held high expectations for our students, the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
(NCLB) has set new standards for students to meet.
Recently the state released a report on the progress Memphis City Schools made toward achieving
proficiency for our students under NCLB. The report identified Raleigh-Egypt High as a school that did
not make “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP). The state identified our school’s 2010-2011 academic
performance status as “School Improvement 2. As a second year school improvement school, we missed
the federal benchmark in the areas of Mathematics, English, and Graduation Rate. To make AYP, a
school must achieve targets in the areas of test participation and performance measured across subgroups
of students (grouped by such categories as race, language proficiency, disability). Additionally AYP
determines whether our school met graduation and attendance rates. If only one subgroup missed just one
target, and entire school does not make AYP.
Academic success will be gained at Raleigh-Egypt High School because we are implementing various
instructional initiatives such as Reading Plus, Reading and Writing a Cross the Curriculum, Literacy
Strategies, E-Learning, Course Recovery, Saturday School, End-of-Course Blitz, Stanford Math,
Discovery Assessments, and after school tutoring. As a result of implementing these strategies, our
scores will increase.
Raleigh-Egypt High School has many outstanding teachers, assistant principals, and support staff who
regularly update their skills and participate in training to help them meet the needs of all students.
Please examine the results for yourself and look closely at the gains that our school has made. Most
importantly, I urge you to join me in addressing the challenge of daily attendance and graduation rate for
our current and future students. I also urge you to applaud the success of our students and the great work
that is taking place throughout our building. Your comments, suggestions and most importantly, your
involvement in our school are invited and always helpful.
Sincerely yours,
Michael Bailey
