YouthServe Youth Philanthropy Council
dedicated youth, 15-18, wanted!
The Youth Philanthropy Council seeks to involve young people, ages 15-18, in the learning and
giving aspects of philanthropy. We define philanthropy as: the giving of time, treasure, or
talent for the common good. We will learn together about non-profits, professionalism, grant
writing and grant making, as well as the needs of the Birmingham Community. We will have
dynamic speakers and visit cool places all over Birmingham. YPC participants will also create a
Request for Proposals, so that local organizations can apply for grants from the YPC. YPC (you!)
gets to decide where the money goes and award actual grants to deserving organizations!
Come be a part of a hands-on learning experience and challenge yourself to better understand
what philanthropy actually is!
This Council will be comprised of fifteen young people throughout the greater Birmingham
area. Applicants will commit to serve on the Initiative from August 2012 to May 2013. There will
be a mandatory opening retreat in August (TBA). Participants will be required to attend one
evening meeting per month, as well as four of YouthServe’s Saturday Volunteer Workdays
(9am-2pm). In May 2013, we will also have a closing retreat, the date TBD.
