Renal Imaging Technology Development Program (RITDP)
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the Renal Imaging Technology Development Program (RITDP) is to provide a source of seed
funding to foster research activities in the development of new, innovative, renal imaging-related
technologies*. The intent of the RITDP is to develop new quantitative renal imaging technologies that will
enhance the diagnosis of kidney diseases and the evaluation of the efficacy of therapeutic interventions and
not just the utilization of currently available imaging technologies in renal studies.
RATIONALE
The aim of the Renal Imaging Technology Development Program (RITDP) is to enhance the IUPUI renal
research community’s ability to compete successfully for research grants and contracts that require the
development and implementation of advanced and novel renal imaging methods.
*Definition of Imaging-Related Technology: Any technology associated with the acquisition of images, display
of image information, or quantitative analyses of the information contained within an image.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA



All full-time faculty, including tenured/tenure track faculty and faculty in the clinical, research and scientist
ranks are eligible to apply as the Principal Investigator.
Faculty in visiting ranks and post-doctoral research associates are not eligible.
An investigator may not serve as PI on more than one RITDP proposal in a given round.
NATURE OF PROPOSALS

The intent of the RITDP is to seed pilot projects for the development of new, innovative, renal imagingrelated technologies designed to diagnose kidney disease and evaluate efficacy of therapeutic
interventions. It is expected that the funded pilot projects will provide the preliminary studies needed to
demonstrate the feasibility of developing and implementing the new renal imaging-related technology
resulting in an external grant submission or the successful development of new technology that is now
available to other renal imaging investigators.
FUNDING AND PROJECT DURATION:







A total of $45,000 from the Renal Imaging Technology Development Program is available to fund
meritorious proposals.
Although there is no specific limit for the total proposed budget (up to $45k), it is strongly recommended
the maximum total budget for the submitted proposal not exceed the range of $10k to $15k.
Proposals with larger budgets will be subject to increased scrutiny during the review process.
The budget cannot include faculty salary or travel. Staff salary, student salary (but not tuition and fees),
equipment, imaging costs, animal model costs, patient costs, and supplies costs are permitted.
Projects will be limited to one (1) year in duration. Requests for a one (1) year no cost extension must be
approved by the IUPUI Research Center for Quantitative Renal Imaging.
Funds will not be granted for similar projects currently supported by other internal or external funding
mechanisms at the campus or university level.
Previously submitted (but un-awarded) RITDP proposals can be resubmitted. Resubmitted proposals will
be considered de novo applications.
Previous RITDP awardees are ineligible to receive an additional RITDP award unless they have met the
requirements in their RITDP award letter (i.e. submitted a final report, submitted evidence of an external
grant submission based, in part, on work from the previous RITDP award or the successful development of
new technology that is now available to renal imaging investigators).
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:



Investigators should be aware that reviewers outside of their designated research area may be reviewing
the proposals. Therefore, it is important to write the proposal in a manner understandable to non-content
experts.
Use standard paper size 8 ½ x 11 with at least 1/2 inch margins.
Use an Arial, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype, or Georgia typeface, a black font color, and a font size of 11
points or larger. Charts, grafts, figures and so on may be in color.
Applications should include the following sections:
Section 1. Cover Page
Use the Cover Page form provided. A copy of the IRB, IACUC and/or IBC form must be included in the
Appendix when these forms are required to conduct the proposed work. For projects requiring initial IRB,
IACUC or IBC approval, RITDP uses the Just-In-Time procedure.
Section 2. Proposal Abstract
State the proposal’s objective(s) and specific aims. Describe concisely the research design and methods for
achieving these objectives. Avoid summaries of past accomplishments and the use of the first person. The
abstract is meant to serve as a succinct and accurate description of the proposed work when separated from
the application. Do not include proprietary/confidential information. Keep the abstract to a half page in
length.
Section 3. Key Personnel
List all key personnel and their departmental affiliation.
Section 4. Budget Page
Use the Budget Form page provided.
Section 5. Budget Justification
Limit budget justification to two (2) pages. Describe the role of each individual on the project and list their
%FTE on the project (including %FTE on the project not covered by RITDP funds). List each item of
equipment with amount requested separately and justify each purchase. Itemize supplies in separate
categories, such as glassware, chemicals, radioisotopes, etc. If animals are to be purchased, state the
species and the number to be used.
Section 6. Biographical Sketches
A biosketch must be included for all key personnel. Use the NIH format excluding the “Personal Statement”.
Limit each biographical sketch to four (4) pages. List all current and pending internal and external research
support, as well as past support for the previous three years. The NIH form and biosketch sample are available
at http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html.
Section 7. Research Plan (This section is limited to a maximum of three (3) pages in length. Research
Plans longer than 3 pages will not be reviewed.)
The Research Plan should include the following: Brief descriptions of 1) Goals/Aims; 2) Rationale/Background;
3) Brief overview of approach; 4) Potential Significance if work is accomplished; 5) Plan for future technology
development and external funding strategy. Additional pages permitted for Biosketches, Budget, & Budget
Justification.
Section 8. References (not included in the 3 page limit)
Use the NIH or NSF format to cite your literature. See page 3 of the NIH Biosketch sample referenced in
Section 6. (The references do not count toward the 3 page limit for the research plan.)
Section 9. Appendix
 A copy of the IRB, IACUC and/or IBC form must be included when these forms are required to conduct the
proposed work. If awarded, no funds will be transferred without the proper approvals.
 Letters confirming the provision of additional resources and/or partnerships with external stakeholders can
be included, if applicable.
 Description of the facilities available for this project including laboratories, clinical resources, office space,
animal quarters, major items of equipment available for this work, etc.
REVIEW AND SELECTION OF PROPOSALS
Review and selection of the grant proposals will be carried out as follows:
 Review: Proposals will be reviewed by members of the IUPUI Research Center for Quantitative Renal
Imaging and, potentially, other experts within the IUPUI research community, if necessary. Some
proposals may be forwarded to the Indiana CTSI PDT Program for further evaluation and
development.
 Review Criteria: Assess potential impact of proposed study on strengthening the development and
utilization of advanced and novel renal imaging methods and ability to secure external funding for further
development and utilization.
KEY DATES


RITDP applications due by 5 PM on June 15, 2015.
Awarded RITDP funding to begin June 25, 2015.
POST AWARD REQUIREMENTS


If an award is made, a final 1-page summary must be submitted to the IUPUI Research Center for
Quantitative Renal Imaging within 30 days of the termination of the award period. Lists of refereed papers
submitted, abstract and presentations funded by the RITDP grant must be provided. Additional follow-up
information may be requested outside of the final report submission requirement, to determine the ongoing
efficacy of the RITDP mechanism.
It is expected that the recipients of an RITDP award will submit a final report as well as submit evidence of
an external grant submission based, in part, on work from the RITDP award or the successful development
of new technology that is now available to renal imaging investigators. Recipients are reminded to
acknowledge receipt of RITDP support in any presentation or publication of work funded by an RITDP
grant.
