Free Collections to Reduce Hazardous Waste
Zero Waste SA Chief Executive Vaughan Levitzke has announced free hazardous
waste collections in the State’s south east.
Mr Levitzke said the collections will be held in Mt Gambier and Naracoorte for
residents to clear unwanted hazardous chemicals from their homes and farms.
“Zero Waste SA is offering the free collections in conjunction with the District Council
of Grant, the City of Mt Gambier and Naracoorte Lucindale Council,’’ he said.
“The collection team will accept hazardous fluids including fuel, sump oil, paint,
pesticides as well as hazardous hard waste such as batteries and household
products such as aerosol cans, medicines and solvent-based cleaners.
“They will not accept empty farm chemical containers or electronic waste. Unwanted
chemicals delivered to the collection depots will be unloaded by trained workers and
disposed of or recycled in an environmentally safe way,” said Mr Levitzke.
District Council of Grant Chief Executive Officer Mr Trevor Smart asked that
householders spare a thought for the staff working at the depot collecting the
chemicals.
“When delivering materials to the collection sites please keep chemicals in their
original containers where possible, and ensure these are clearly labelled and well
sealed.
“Open or leaking containers should be transported in another container such as a
plastic rubbish bin or bucket, clearly labelled with the contents.
“The waste materials should ideally be transported in a ute, a trailer or the boot of a
car, to maximise driver safety and help with unloading at the depot.”
