Nursing at Cincinnati Children’s, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is actively seeking experienced RNs to
join our team. Our Division is hosting an open house recruitment and education event
specifically seeking RNs with at least one-year of professional nursing experience. We will offer
a FREE 1 hour nursing contact hour to those who register online and attend this event in
addition to the opportunity to interview for one of our open nursing positions.
There is something special about the nurses at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical
Center! You can see it in the respect they get. You can hear it in the compassionate way they
speak up for and care about children and their families. From the moment they enter the room,
their high energy and intelligence set them apart. They are professionals who excel in the
stimulating environment of a top-3 children's hospital and research center. They are
instrumental in developing best practices and are encouraged to continue their education and
advance their careers. What's more, Cincinnati Children's has earned Magnet recognition − the
gold standard for nursing excellence and collaboration among all care providers and patients.
Organizations that earn Magnet recognition must demonstrate evidence of the 14 "forces of
magnetism" − variables that create an environment that attracts and retains high-quality nurses
and clinical staff − in both the documentation and a site visit. Only 5 percent of hospitals in the
United States have earned Magnet status.
A BSN or entry level MSN is highly preferred. Nurses must commit to obtaining a BSN
within one year of hire date and completing within five years. Education assistance is available
for employees working a minimum of a 0.5 FTE once the six month introductory period has
been successfully completed.
All nurses are hired to work 8 hour shifts and every other weekend. Nurses working off
shifts receive a $4.00/hour shift differential and a $5.00/hour weekend differential ($9.00/hour
additional for an off- shift weekend). All schedules are subject to change in order to meet
departmental needs.
Salaries are determined by the number of years of RN experience as compared to
internal staff and range from $22.25/hour to $35.85/hour. Nurses may eventually consider
application for clinical advancement with resulting promotional increase.
Cincinnati Children’s Division of Psychiatry is the largest nonprofit pediatric psychiatry
facility in the country, offering 92 inpatient psychiatry beds, over 30 secure residential
treatment beds and robust outpatient mental health services. Inpatient services are provided
at three locations including; Lindner Center of HOPE, Cincinnati Children’s Burnet Campus and

program treatment.
Our nurses plan and provide individualized, well-coordinated care for children and
families through Relationship Based Care and Primary Nursing care delivery models. Our nurses

Psychiatric Inpatient Units
Inpatient Units serve children and adolescents ages 2 to 18. Children admitted to an
inpatient unit will have a primary psychiatric disorder according to the most recent edition of
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders. Each child admitted presents
with illnesses or behaviors that are severe enough (a danger to self or others) to prohibit
alternative treatments and that require 24-hour supervision and care. The average length of
stay for these patients is 5-7 days. Each of our inpatient units is co-gendered and can have a
patient census between 10-12. Typical diagnoses treated in the inpatient setting include, but
are not limited to, Depression, Bipolar Disorders, Psychosis, Anxiety Disorder, Impulse Control
Disorders, Reactive Attachment Disorders, Attention-Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders,
Eating Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and co-occurring psychiatric and
developmental disorders.
Services are provided by a multidisciplinary treatment team utilizing an individualized
patient plan of care. Inpatient services offer assessment, diagnosis, and treatment utilizing a
variety of modalities including evidenced based interventions, individual therapy, family
therapy, group therapy, as appropriate. As part of an inpatient team, nurses provide acute
psychiatric care for children and adolescents in a safe, therapeutic environment. Nurses provide
structure and support, behavioral management, patient/family education, and therapeutic
group activities that promote achievement of individual goals for recovery.
Patients receive ongoing psychiatric observation and supervision for evaluation and
medication management if necessary. The inpatient psychiatric services receive support from
other ancillary/medical services in the hospital through consultations or referrals if indicated
(speech therapy, Occupational therapy, etc).

but may not need psychiatric inpatient hospitalization. We help children develop the coping
skills they need to successfully return to their daily routine at home, at school and in the
