Intramurals, while in a competitive setting, are primarily for recreational purposes. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to participate, not a right. In conjunction with the mission statement of FGCU Campus Recreation, Intramurals intends to provide participants with a positive, social atmosphere for competition. Fighting, taunting and/or showing disrespect toward a peer or administrator will not be accepted and will be penalized. Having fun, while competing, is an important aspect of Intramurals at Florida Gulf Coast University for all participants: students, faculty and staff.
Procedure of the Sportsmanship Rating System:
After each game, the game’s official will award a Sportsmanship Rating to each team. The
Supervisor will keep record of all game’s scores and team’s Sportsmanship Ratings. The teams will be rated in whole numbers on a scale of 0-4 and must maintain above a 2.5 average to qualify for playoffs. The 2.5 average must also be maintained throughout playoffs.
Captain Responsibilities: Captains play a vital role not only in the success of the Intramural program, but their players and team. Captains are the leaders on the playing field and set the example for all players and teams. Information that is dispersed to captains is essential and should be passed along to the entire team. Lack of knowledge of policies, procedures and rules is not an excuse and will be a direct reflection of the captain. It is the responsibility of the captain to ensure that his/her team acts in an appropriate and sportsmanlike manner. This policy also includes the teams' spectators and fans. If spectators that can be directly tied to a team, by an
Intramural staff member, fail to act in a sportsmanlike manner, that team's captain will be penalized accordingly (individual/team warning, yellow card, technical foul, unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, etc...).
Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Acts of unsportsmanlike conduct will be penalized in accordance with the Intramural disciplinary actions and that sport's rules set. Decisions are final on all disciplinary actions (participants cannot appeal a suspension).
Confrontations with Opponents, Intramural Staff, Officials, Scorekeepers/ID, Supervisors and/or Coordinators: It is inevitable that participants will eventually disagree with rulings made by Intramural staff or officials or dislike opposing players. However, disagreements can be handled in a responsible and respectful manner. When participants act in a confrontational or hostile manner, they will be disciplined. Intimidating, threatening, or attempting to fight an official or any Intramural staff member will have the participant suspended INDEFINITELY from all Intramural sports and events. Intimidating, threatening or attempting to fight an opponent will have the participant suspended for one calendar year from the date the incident took place.

Ejections: If participants receive two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, two yellow cards=red card, one red card, flagrant foul, or are ejected for any other reason, they remain ineligible for all
Intramural sports and events until reinstated by the Coordinator. In order to be reinstated, participants must:
1) Meet with the Coordinator of Intramurals (Mike Howard): Following ejection, the participant must contact Mike Howard (239-590-7938) to schedule a meeting at their earliest convenience. The participant may not participate in any Intramural sports/events until meeting with the Coordinator and a suspension is finalized.
2) Suspension: All participants that are ejected due to unsportsmanlike behavior will be suspended for a minimum of (1) week, including all Intramural games during that timeframe.
This suspension depends on the severity of the incident, repeat occurrences during the same semester/academic year, and the disposition of the participant.
Defaults: A team defaults when contacting the Intramural Office (239-590-7037) or that sport’s
Intramural Supervisor at least 24 hours in advance of their next game to give plenty of time to notify the opposing team they will be receiving the win. The game will not be re-scheduled.
When a team defaults, both teams will receive a sportsmanship rating of (3) three. One default is given per team, per regular season play; two or more defaults will count as a forfeit(s).
Forfeits: A team forfeits when the entire team is a no-show or the team does not have the correct number of players to start the game on time . When a team forfeits for any reason, that team will receive a sportsmanship rating no higher than a (2) two. The game will not be rescheduled. The winning team will receive a (3) three for sportsmanship. Any team that forfeits two regular season games will not be eligible for the playoffs. Exception: If a team falls below the minimum number of players due to an injury, that team will receive the sportsmanship rating they would have received as if the game was over.
Procedure: After each game, the official will award a Sportsmanship Rating to each team. The teams will be rated in whole numbers on a scale of 0-4 and must maintain above a 2.5 average to qualify for playoffs. The 2.5 average must also be maintained throughout playoffs.
Rating Scale: The sportsmanship of each team will be rated as follows:
(4) Four: Outstanding Sportsmanship and Conduct . The team goes above and beyond expectations to maintain a sportsmanlike atmosphere. A team shall receive a (4) four only when they maintain a high level of sportsmanship throughout a game/match where controversy could easily occur with close calls and/or plays.

(3) Three: Good sportsmanship and Conduct . Teams begin at this level, and if no positive or negative actions occur, the team will receive this score. Team members are in control throughout the game and the captain resolves any minor issues that may arise. The team does not show aggressive dissent toward the staff or opposing team. No sportsmanship related action is taken against any team member. At the discretion of the officials/IM staff, a team may receive ONE individual/team warning and maintain a (3) three.
(2) Two: Below Average Sportsmanship and Conduct . Team shows dissent toward officials, staff, and/or opponents that result in a yellow card, intentional foul, technical foul, or unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The team is consistently complaining about calls and is uncooperative at times. Any dissent after the ONE individual/team warning will result in a score no higher than a (2) two.
(1) One: Fair Sportsmanship and Conduct . Team members continuously show dissent toward staff and/or opponents or use abusive and/or inappropriate language toward staff and/or opponents. Team is continuously “trash talking” opponents and/ or intimidating staff and/or opponents and/or playing dangerously/malicious. The captain is unresponsive and uncooperative in helping officials and staff members control teammates. This includes receiving 2 yellow cards=red card, 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, 2 intentional/technical fouls, a flagrant foul, and/or a player misrepresenting him/herself using another student’s FGCU ID card.
Threatening staff and/or opponents, making physical contact in an aggressive or threatening manner (ex: pushing, kicking, head-butting, excessively swinging elbows) are considered actions for immediate ejection. Any team that has a player ejected or who receives two unsportsmanlike related penalties MUST receive no higher than a (1) one.
(0) Zero: Poor Sportsmanship and Conduct . Conduct unacceptable of all Intramural and
FGCU expectations, principles, and policies. The team is out of control, intoxicated/under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, or shows a complete disregard for authority. The team captain shows no control over actions of his/her teammates. Multiple major problems arise during the contest. Any team which takes part in a bench clearing (other than to remove your teammates from potential harm), fight, instigates a fight, or throws a punch (whether connected or not) will receive a (0) zero and those individual players will be suspended from all Intramural sports until reinstated by the Coordinator. Any team that receives a (0) zero is subject to disqualification from participation for the remainder of that sport and possibly the semester, academic or calendar year. All players on a team receiving a zero may be suspended INDEFINITELY. There is zero tolerance on fighting.
