Abstract
Nanotechnology has led to new developments for production of new materials, devices, structures and
sensors. Attempts are being made to fabricate nanomaterials with a unique combination of properties
for its application in the fields of biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, construction, environment,
engineering and electronics industry. Nanocomposite materials are reinforced with different forms of
carbon such as nano diamond, carbon nano tubes and pyrolitic graphite in order to improve thermal
conductivity for thermal applications. These materials present new challenges in production and
characterization to employ in the fabrication of engineering components. This Seminar highlights the
some new production methods that are used in the production of CNT and diamond reinforced copper
in addition to aluminium based composites, suitable for thermal management applications. Thermal
conductivity in CNT and diamond based composites up to 700 Wm/K have been demonstarted. The
interfacial nanostructure of the composite samples is examined by advanced analytical techniques.
Emphasis is placed on the understanding of preferential interfacial bonding between matrix and
reinforcement to enhance the thermal conductivity of these nanocomposites.
