Our Latest Associate in the Digital World News 'Outer Space' Photography by Laura Howell Laura Howell's image titled 'Outer Space' was chosen on June 10th as Photo of the Day by the Imaging Resource Photo of the Day Contest. The image can be viewed on their website at www.dailydigitalphoto.com A very intriguing photograph! Interesting Art-i-Fact for July What are the images that make you think of Florida? Palm trees, beaches, and naturally, golf courses immediately come to mind. How about coquina? Thanks to those abundant beaches, coquina has been used as a building stone in Florida for over 400 years. The most famous architectural structure built of coquina is the fort in St. Augustine, the Castillo de San Marcos. Coquina is composed of seashells or coral, that are abraded and broken up by the tides and currents and eventually become sedimentary rock which is then quarried or mined. The stone made a very good building material for forts, particularly those constructed during the periods of heavy cannon use. Because of coquina's softness, cannonballs would sink into, rather than shatter or puncture, the fortress walls. Not a building material you will find in, say, Kansas! Mt.
