Artisans on fifth Stays Involved in Community Support Two on-going annual events "Bra-Vo" and the Marilyn Dodge Scholarship, illustrate that Artisans on fifth is dedicated to continuing to reach out and help people in our community. "Bra-Vo" raises funds through sponsorships, Art Bra sales and votes, and flamingo sales. The Art Bras, on display at the Mount Dora Center for the Arts Gallery during the month of October, are created by anyone who wants to get involved. This year’s event chairs Heather JW Hopcraft, Tina Coalter and Christina Smith, are bringing many new and fresh ideas to the fundraiser and are continuing the tradition of assuring that the Art Bra Exhibit a highly anticipated annual event in Lake County. Ceramic BraVo Entry by artist Sue Cannon The Marilyn Dodge Scholarship was established in 2012, to honor Marilyn, who passed away in September of that year. Marilyn was a founding artist Associate at Artisans on fifth and was an absolutely wonderful lady. Marilyn had a heart of gold and was always willing to volunteer "above and beyond the call of duty". She had a great sense of humor, was a joy to be with and will be remembered for her zest for life. Artisans on fifth pays tribute to Marilyn's memory by holding a raffle each month in the gallery, featuring art work that is donated by the artists. The proceeds from the raffle are designated for the Marilyn Dodge Scholarship fund. At the end of the year, the accumulated funds are given to the Women's Committee of Fine Arts (WCFA) of Mount Dora in Marilyn's honor. Interesting Art - i - fact for November: The art versus craft debate is the attempt to resolve the definition of "art" and the definition of "craft". The debate hinges on an ever-evolving understanding of the perception of what is considered art. The central question is how to determine whether craft is art. A craft may be defined as a skill a making useful items, whereas art is a symbolic expression of ideas, emotions and experiences. It has been said that, "Contemporary craft is about making things". Craft objects tend to be utilitarian. The primary purpose of craft is function. A craft object, such as a handwoven scarf or blanket, a basket or clay pottery, is designed to serve a distinct purpose, to fill a need. Art has been described as the creation of something that represents human expression. Music, sculpture, painting and dance are generally accepted as art. Art is a symbolic expression of emotions and ideas. A few of the qualities of art are listed as: to beautify, to express, to redefine reality, to illustrate, adorn, or record. The fundamental purpose of art is to fix in a tangible form ideas, emotions and experiences. The definition of art often depends on cultural influences, thus the term, "fine art" in Western culture exhibiting a bias toward the differences between art and craft. However, practical craft items can be defined as art when used as conduits for artistic expression of emotions and communication of ideas.
