May 2015 Newsletter Grand Island FROM THE DIRECTOR: Spring is here and the weather is finally warm! I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer days. Now that we are spending time outside, please send in sunscreen to keep here and be sure to have you child wear sneakers. Thank you for helping us stay safe outdoors. This month we will be celebrating teacher appreciation week. I will be sending home a letter with papers for you to fill out for each teacher to help show them how much we appreciate all that they do each day. Thank you for helping to make it a special week! At the end of this month, I am sad to say that our 3’s teacher Miss Jodi will be moving to Alaska. She has done a wonderful job this school year and I truly appreciate all of the love and care she has given to each and every child in her room. She will be missed. Kindergarten orientation will be on May 19th. This will be held at Sidway School for parents and preschoolers to attend. Sidway children will be having a half day of school on that day as well. I wanted to get the word out early for a fundraising event we will be having in June. We plan to have a family yard sale for anyone who may be interested. On Saturday June 13th, you may bring a table and things you wish to sell. There will be a small donation for each family that participates. Do some spring cleaning and help support Care-A-Lot! A letter will be going home when the date gets closer. Just a reminder. We will be closed on May 25 for Memorial Day. Enjoy your long weekend with your family! Miss Jenny BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: Nicholas W. – 15th Grayson S. -28th Faith D. – 9th Isabella J. - 10th Nik M.- 17th NURSERY 1: The year is moving so fast! It’s May already, and with the theme being May Showers, hopefully we get more sun and flowers than showers. This month, we plan to have lots of rain and flower activities. We will play with warm and cold water to feel the difference. We will also paint raindrops with our feet and flowers with our hands for Mommy! Happy Mother’s day, especially to our new Moms! As always, please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and your little one. Thank you, Miss Reece, Miss Jarilyn NURSERY 2: This will be a month full of learning and fun for Nursery 2! We will be focusing on animal sounds, where animals live, and doing animalthemed crafts. We’ll learn about farm animals, such as: cows, pigs, sheep, and horses. We will learn new songs such as: “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, “Farmer in the Dell”, and “5 Little Ducks”. We will also talk about domestic animals like cats, dogs, and birds, and different zoo animals. We will be going crafts for each set of animals, along with looking at pictures of each animal. Miss Rhianna, Miss Cathy & Miss Chris TODDLER 1: April showers will hopefully bring May flowers! This past month, we learned all about water and seas creatures! We loved playing in the water and with our seas creature figurines. We made jello and went fishing for goldfish, inside popcorn. In May, we will be exploring classic storybook characters. We will read “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, “There was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly”, “The Little Engine That Could”, and many more. Miss Melissa & Miss Vanessa TODDLER 2: Hello and happy May! month we will be focusing on storybook characters by jumping into some classic children's stories such as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear”, “There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly”, “The Little Engine That Could” and so many others. During this time we will be practicing our rhyming skills, sorting colors and sizes and learning fun new songs/ finger plays. Likewise, we will be creating a number of one of-a-kind art projects going along with each story. We are also looking forward to sunny weather and being able to get outside on the playground. Finally, I want to wish all of our magnificent mothers a Happy Mother's Day! Miss Dominique & Miss Julia PRESCHOOL 1: I cannot believe that we are already in the month of May! This month we will be talking about rainbows, rain, mother’s day, and finish exploring what spring has to offer before we are officially in summer. As the weather is getting warmer and we are spending more time outside we are asking parents to please bring in sunscreen for your child. This month will also be Miss Jodi’s last month at Care-A-Lot. Her family is moving to the great state of Alaska. She wants to thank you all for allowing her to take care of your children, and meeting all the parents off Preschool 1. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us. Miss Jodi, Miss Amanda UPK This month, our lessons will be based on the review of the letters X, Y, and Z. Also, we will talk about how we can discover the difference between a good behavior and a bad behavior, and why it is important to be responsible for our own actions. In addition, children will learn about Memorial Day. Learning domains will be covered through hands-on exploration, critical thinking, problem solving, interaction with peers and adults, and making appropriate choices. Our Math activities will help your children answer the following questions: Can I recognize and match attributes of objects, such as size, shape, and color? Am I able to use rules to sort objects? Am I able to use rules to create and extend repeating patterns? Can I write my numbers up to and including 15 correctly? Our ELA activities will include reading books on the topics mentioned earlier. Children will be encouraged to ask questions and give appropriate responses. In addition to selfintroduction, birthdays, saying their home addresses, children will practice saying what country/state/town they are from. Our Science activities will help your children predict, guess, observe, participate, manipulate, and make conclusions. We will do science experiments, such as Magic Bottle, Magic Milk, and Color Mixing. Our Fine-Motor Skills activities will include cutting with scissors, stenciling, gluing, writing with markers/ pencils, coloring with colored pencils and crayons, painting, playing with plastic tweezers, playing with play-dough, clay, colored rice, moon sand, etc. May 22nd, 2015 – Memorial Day Weekend – No UPK. May 25th, 2015 – Memorial Day – No UPK. May 2015 Newsletter Grand Island Miss Natalia PRESCHOOL 2: We are planning a graduation night to honor our budding scholars. The celebration will be held at Sidway Elementary on Baseline road on Wednesday June 17th. Please have your child there by 6:45. There will also be a guest sign-up sheet outside our classroom door. Meanwhile, we will be starting our “What I learned books” and that you can be very proud of your child’s achievements they’ve accomplished this year. During May we will explore a variety of themes correlating with nursery rhymes, the season of spring, Memorial Day, and of course, how we love our Mom’s. If you have not registered your child for kindergarten yet, please do as soon as possible. The number for kindergarten registration is 773-8870. A parent-child orientation and tour will be held on Tuesday, May 19th, and 1:00 p.m. Please let us know if your child will be attending and returning to day care after the program. Sidway’s kindergarten screening is beginning August 3rd, and runs until the 14th. Appointments need to be made at the district office. Please let us know what your plans are for the summer and vacation times. Just a reminder, we offer a before and after school program for your kindergarteners. We are wishing all our Mom’s a relaxing Mother’s Day! Take care! Miss Debbie & Miss Stefanie SCHOOL AGERS: This year is flying by, and the end is almost here. That means that it is time to start thinking about summer camp! Miss Rachel and Miss Breanna are hosting summer camp this year. A letter was sent home describing all the field trips, and items your camper will need in order to have an awesome time! We are very excited to see returning faces and new faces this summer! Our school agers have a few days off of school this month. On Friday, May 1st, the school agers have a half day of school. The next day off is Monday 4th, and on Friday the 22nd for Memorial weekend. Please visit the Parents Information board to sign your child up for those days. Just a reminder, Care-A-Lot will be closed on Monday the 25th for Memorial Day. The weather is finally warming up, which means that the school agers will be going outside more often. Please make sure that your child has sneakers on so that they can play on the big climber. If you also wish for your child to wear sunscreen before going outside, please bring in a labeled bottle and give it to one of the school age teachers. We can apply it as often as you would like.
